Nursery at Greenfields Primary School

Language, pencil control and learning to play together give Greenfields’ youngest children a practical starting point. Little Conkers is the nursery class at Greenfields Primary School in Shrewsbury, with provision for two-year-olds within the school’s early years.
Ofsted graded the early years provision Good at the inspection on 13 and 14 May 2025. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Conversation does real teaching work here. In May 2025, adults introduced vocabulary through their exchanges with children, while the two-year-old provision combined language development with recognising shapes and learning how to grip a pencil. These are concrete foundations for expressing ideas and handling early learning tasks.
Activities in the early years had an identifiable learning purpose that staff understood. The youngest children gained confidence, and children’s ability to handle their feelings helped them play together. Learning therefore includes the social work of sharing an activity, alongside developing language and physical skills.
The wider school grounds include sensory gardens, forest school space and the wooded Willow area. These give the school a substantial outdoor setting.
For children beginning school for the first time, familiarisation sessions take place before they start. Parents also attend a meeting covering learning, routines and behaviour, followed by conversations with the class teacher about settling. This gives families a chance to understand the routines and discuss how their child is adjusting.
Early years support for special educational needs and disabilities includes Early Talk Boost, Colourful Semantics and small-group work on counting, pencil control and using scissors. Support addresses specific skills. Contact with speech and language services and the Shropshire Child Development Centre provides a route to specialist advice.
Parents receive informal early years updates through Tapestry, telephone calls, email and meetings in person. Pupil Centred Plans are reviewed with parents each term, so support can be discussed and adjusted around the child’s progress.
Nursery children receive free milk. For children attending Treehouse, breakfast is eaten in the Hub, while the afternoon snack can include sandwiches or wraps. Nursery children are escorted to class after breakfast club and taken to Treehouse by a teacher or teaching assistant after their nursery day, making the handover an adult responsibility.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority; Shropshire residents apply through Shropshire Council. The normal deadline is 15 January in the academic year before entry.
For 2026/27, nursery attendance gives no priority within Greenfields’ Reception allocation criteria. Choosing Little Conkers therefore needs to stand on the nursery experience itself. Transition support is a separate matter: teachers share SEND information with the next teacher, and extra classroom visits or transition booklets can be arranged where needed.
The nursery gate and door open at 8:45am, registration is at 8:50am and nursery closes at 3:05pm. Those nursery-specific times matter when planning collection around siblings’ school days.
Treehouse extends childcare around the nursery day. Breakfast club begins at 7:50am, and after-school care runs until 6:00pm. Bookings and payments use Arbor from September 2026, with sessions subject to availability. Cancellations must be emailed. At least four weeks’ notice is needed for a credit; shorter notice does not qualify for a refund. Contact the school for current charges.
Enquiries can go to office@greenfieldssbmat.com or 01743 236397. Children must be brought and collected by a parent or an authorised adult, and families should tell staff about changes to collection arrangements.
