Learning the names of colours while painting gives a clear flavour of Mount Pleasant’s nursery: practical activity becomes an opportunity to build language. Provision includes children aged two and forms part of Mount Pleasant Primary on Whitemere Road in Shrewsbury. The emphasis is on the foundations children need to take part in learning: communicating, understanding feelings and developing physically.
In the January 2026 Ofsted inspection, early years met the Expected standard. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. It gives families a relevant starting point for considering the youngest children’s education.
Communication starts with the youngest children. Staff help two-year-olds acquire useful vocabulary during painting, including words for colours. Learning has an immediate purpose: children can connect a new word with something they are doing. Painting gives two-year-olds an opportunity to learn colour vocabulary alongside practical activity.
Across early years, children return regularly to things adults have already taught them. These opportunities to practise help learning become familiar, and staff provide additional help for children who need it. The early years foundation stage here gives attention to physical development and emotions alongside communication. For parents, that means the educational emphasis extends beyond early academic skills to how children express themselves and understand their feelings.
The Darwin growth curriculum also starts in early years. In January 2026, its sequence was coherent, its content suited children’s ages and its teaching was adapted to differing needs. This connects the youngest children’s personal development with a named approach used across the school.
Parents and carers are involved in early years learning and kept informed about it. That connection matters when a child is developing new language or needs extra help: learning is something families participate in, rather than something confined to the session.
An EYFS manager also holds the SENDCo role, bringing early years leadership and coordination of special educational needs and disabilities together. Within early years, staff give children additional learning support during practice activities. Help is therefore connected to the learning already taking place. The useful detail for families is the combination of a coordinating role and support within children’s activities.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as two distinct steps. Choosing this provision should rest on its suitability for your child’s early years, rather than an assumption that a school place follows automatically.
