Ladybirds gives Oakmeadow’s youngest children a named place within school life. This is the nursery provision at Oakmeadow Church of England Primary and Nursery School, on the Longmeadow Site in Bayston Hill, Shrewsbury. Government funding is accepted for children aged two, three and four, making the provision relevant to families at different stages before school.
The emphasis is on getting comfortable with learning and daily routines. At the December 2024 inspection, children in the early years settled promptly, developed familiarity with expectations and received care that helped them engage with learning. That matters for families weighing the move from home into a school setting.
Learning has a planned sequence. The curriculum identifies the knowledge and skills children should develop over time, including within the early years. For parents, the useful distinction is that activities form part of a developing learning journey rather than simply filling a session.
In December 2024, the early years environment supported children’s development, and adults helped them build personal and social skills. Everyday routines are part of that experience: becoming familiar with expectations sits alongside learning itself. The emphasis reaches beyond completing activities to helping children participate in school life.
Parents can share some of that experience through stay and play and snuggle up to read sessions. These give families a connection with their child’s early years day and practical ways to continue learning at home. Shared reading is a concrete starting point.
Food offers a straightforward choice. Milk and snacks are included in fees; a school dinner carries an extra charge, while children may bring a packed lunch. Families can therefore choose between a provided lunch and food brought from home. Contact the school for current charges.
Support for additional needs connects nursery with the wider school team. Oakmeadow says nursery attendance helps it recognise learning barriers and social or emotional needs early. Its Learning 4 Life Framework starts with classroom support, with the Waves process providing a route to adaptations, intervention or more personalised provision where needs require it. This gives parents a structure for discussing support as their child’s needs become clearer.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat choosing Ladybirds and applying for school as two separate decisions.
For September entry, Shropshire residents use Shropshire Council’s admissions route. Families living in another county or in Wales apply first through their own council, which communicates with Shropshire Council. Familiarity with the school does not replace that application.
The school day begins at 8.40am, with gates opening at 8.35am; nursery finishes at 3.05pm. These times give families concrete points around which to plan the school run.
Alongside government funding for two-, three- and four-year-olds, Ladybirds accepts Tax Free Childcare payments. Keep the additional charge for school dinners in mind when choosing lunch arrangements.
