Sensory gardens, warm swim facilities and an interactive tropical garden give Severndale’s youngest learners several ways to explore. Communication and growing independence shape the provision, with play used to help children interact, make choices and share spaces. This is early education within a specialist school, based at the Monkmoor campus in Shrewsbury.
The Foundation provision covers ages 2½ to 5 and supports children whose needs extend from profound and multiple learning difficulties to moderate learning difficulties. Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection completed on 19 and 20 November 2024. A crucial qualification: the nursery, which included provision for two-year-olds, had no children attending at that time. The early years judgement therefore needs to be read with that nursery context in mind.
Play and exploration provide the starting point for learning. Severndale describes an approach shaped around each child, with families and other agencies involved. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together learning to communicate, move, build relationships and understand feelings, alongside early reading, maths, creativity and discovery of the surrounding world. These areas connect practical skills with the beginnings of classroom learning.
Outdoor learning includes sensory gardens and an on-site Forest School area. Indoors, children in Foundation can access soft play rooms and a specialist interactive room; warm swim facilities and the interactive tropical garden add further settings for exploration. The significance is the variety of spaces available for children with different sensory and physical needs, rather than one classroom being the sole focus of learning.
Progress is assessed through classroom observation. Sharing space and choosing an activity are themselves learning goals, alongside developing independence. In November 2024, early years learning included rhyme and sound work as the starting point for reading, while children learned routines and developed basic physical skills. For parents, this connects small, practical achievements with the next steps in learning.
Partnership with families and work involving other agencies are part of the Foundation approach. Its staffing structure includes teachers, teaching assistants and midday carers or personal support assistants. This gives families distinct teaching and care roles to understand when discussing their child’s support.
Each department has a designated safeguarding lead, giving parents a departmental contact for concerns. There is also an important school-wide caution from November 2024: some targets arising from education, health and care plans were too general to guide sufficiently precise support. Checks on curriculum delivery also needed sharper attention to inconsistencies. For a family considering specialist nursery provision, the practical issue is how their child’s individual needs become specific daily learning and care targets.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families need to apply separately for Reception through the appropriate admissions process. At Severndale, admissions go through Shropshire Council’s SEN team in the first instance. Keep the placement decision separate from the nursery’s work on communication, interaction and independence: developing readiness for the next stage does not secure admission.
