Nursery at St Peter's CofE Primary School

Two weekly patterns give St Peter’s nursery a distinctive rhythm: two full days followed by a Wednesday morning, or a Wednesday afternoon followed by two full days. That split is the practical starting point for families considering the nursery at this Church of England primary school in Wem, on Shrubbery Gardens.
Early years provision received a Good judgement at Ofsted’s inspection on 16 and 17 March 2022. This was an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
At the inspection on 16 and 17 March 2022, the early years curriculum was sequenced to build on children’s existing knowledge and skills. Engaging mathematics activities gave children a positive start. Those findings described learning that connected from one step to the next.
The session pattern also shapes the week. Monday and Tuesday, or Thursday and Friday, run from 8.50am to 3.10pm. Wednesday is shorter for both groups and excludes lunch, so families need a different midday arrangement on that day.
A nursery higher level teaching assistant forms part of the staffing structure. There is also a shower facility in the nursery, a concrete provision relevant to children with personal care needs.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), support follows stages rather than a single fixed package. The school’s Universal Offer includes adjustments to ordinary teaching; Universal Plus + adds interventions for a limited period. Continued, personalised provision comes through SEND Support, with more bespoke arrangements for children who need them. This allows support to change as a child’s needs become clearer.
Parents participate in that process. Children receiving SEND Support, or with an Education Health and Care Plan, have termly Person Centred Plan (PCP) meetings with their class teacher. Adaptations can involve the environment, timetable or curriculum. Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy are among the outside services the school works with, connecting classroom support with specialist advice where needed.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no admissions priority under the 2027-28 arrangements. Families must make a separate application through Shropshire Council by 15th January in the academic year before their child starts. Applicants elsewhere in England apply through their home local authority. Keep that application separate from choosing nursery sessions.
Transition has its own purpose: familiarity. School liaison days begin early in the summer term and introduce children to activities and school life. For children with additional needs, planned programmes cover both starting nursery and moving from nursery to Reception. These preparations support the change of setting; they do not alter the admissions decision.
The Monday-Wednesday pattern ends at 11.10am on Wednesday. The Wednesday-Friday pattern begins at 12.50pm that day, with collection at 3.10pm. Wednesday care. Neither Wednesday session includes lunch. Factor that shorter day into work and collection arrangements.
Prospective parents are welcome to visit the school. Contact the office on 01939 232292 or email admin@stpeters.empowermat.co.uk to enquire about the nursery and arrange a visit.
