Nursery at Bearwood Primary School

Two nursery sessions give Bearwood’s provision a clear shape: a morning starting at 8.30am and an afternoon starting at 12.15pm. Each has its own finishing time, making the nursery timetable a useful starting point for families planning their day.
This is Bearwood Primary School’s nursery class on Bearwood Road in Smethwick. It has a nursery team and its own class page, distinct from the pages for older children. The practical distinction matters too: nursery applications go to the school office, while Reception applications follow a separate route.
Morning nursery runs until 11.30am; the afternoon finishes at 3.15pm. These are nursery hours, so parents should use them when arranging collection rather than assume the wider school timetable applies.
The early years curriculum needs careful attention. At the inspection on 4 and 5 May 2023, Ofsted identified weaknesses in the order of learning in some areas, leaving children with insufficient chances to revisit and embed what they had learned. For a nursery child, practising a skill matters as much as encountering it: the improvement required was a clearer progression of learning, with opportunities to use it again.
Beyond the classroom, the school has Calthorpe Haven, opposite the main site behind Bearwood Chapel. This is a school space used for Forest School, sport and a family picnic. It gives parents a concrete picture of the wider school’s outdoor facilities, rather than establishing a particular nursery activity timetable.
Language development has a named starting point. Children entering nursery receive the WELCOMM language assessment, alongside assessment against Development Matters. This creates a route for identifying needs early, rather than waiting until a child reaches a later school stage.
Bearwood’s SEND arrangements involve parents, class teachers and the special educational needs coordinator. Children on the SEND register have an Individual Provision Plan or a specialised support programme. Parent discussions, review meetings and telephone contact form part of that process; permission is sought before an outside referral or placement on the register. Early Years Inclusion Support is among the specialist services the school can access.
Food brought from home must respect the school’s nut-free policy. Snacks and packed lunches must exclude nuts because children at the school have severe allergies. That restriction matters when preparing anything your child will bring to eat.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the local authority, rather than treating their nursery application as an application for school entry. Bearwood directs Reception applicants to the local authority; its parent links distinguish Sandwell admissions for Sandwell residents and Birmingham admissions for Birmingham residents.
Apply for nursery through the school office. For general enquiries, use admin@bearwood.sandwell.sch.uk or telephone 0121 434 4499; the school also has an online enquiry form.
