At a Glance

Nursery rhymes, storybooks and messy play give Cheswick Green’s nursery its character. Humpty Dumpty and The Very Hungry Caterpillar feature among its learning themes, while cooking, singing and painting form part of the school’s early years curriculum. This is learning through things young children can join in with, talk about and explore.

The nursery belongs to Cheswick Green Primary School in Solihull. Its teaching team includes class teachers and an assistant headteacher, connecting the provision to the school’s wider leadership structure.

The Nursery Day

Play shapes the curriculum. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework guides learning and development, with activities combining children’s own choices, adult guidance and group teaching. Planning responds to children’s interests alongside class themes, giving adults scope to build learning around what catches a child’s attention.

Outdoor learning is part of that pattern throughout the year, except in the hardest weather conditions. Children can choose to learn outside or indoors, with opportunities across the curriculum in both spaces. Creative areas support work on different scales: children experiment with materials and explain what they have made. Making becomes a chance to practise talking as well as handling tools and materials.

Little Wandle Foundations provides the nursery’s early reading preparation. Stories, action rhymes and listening activities develop awareness of sounds and conversation skills. Formal phonics comes later. A book corner is accessible during free-flow play, books can be chosen to share at home, and classes visit the school library weekly.

At the May 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that early years activities had clear learning purposes and that frequent adult conversation helped younger children build vocabulary. That gives the emphasis on talk a concrete basis beyond the curriculum plan.

Care and Support

Home learning has a practical rhythm: weekly challenges and targets each half term give parents activities to share with their child. A Foundation blog also follows learning. In May 2023, early years parents received helpful curriculum information, although the wider school needed clearer communication about changes and children’s provision. The wider school also needed closer curriculum monitoring so staffing could provide more precise help with misunderstandings.

For children needing additional support, the EYFS approach includes adapting task difficulty, varying resources and using classroom assistants with individuals or groups. The school’s Family Support Worker provides another route for discussing concerns, including behaviour, wellbeing and family difficulties.

Settling is supported through planned opportunities to become familiar with staff, surroundings and routines. The nursery page also includes induction and welcome materials. These give families an introduction to the provision before its learning themes take centre stage.

Food arrangements are explicit for afternoon wraparound: children can bring a packed lunch or have a school lunch for an additional charge. Packed lunches must respect the school’s nut-free rule. Fruit snacks, milk and water are offered during the afternoon.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority under the listed oversubscription criteria. Families must make a separate application through Solihull Admissions. The criteria concern children in care, exceptional circumstances, catchment residence, siblings and distance, rather than nursery attendance.

Transition preparation is a separate matter. How to Catch a Star appears as a nursery transition theme, alongside the school’s planned familiarisation with new routines, environments and adults. Familiarity supports the move; allocation still follows the admissions process.

Practical Information

The school handles nursery enquiries and applications. Contact the office on 01564 703336 or email office@cheswick-green.solihull.sch.uk.

Afternoon wraparound runs from noon until 3pm for children aged three to four, with collection at 3.30pm possible for an additional charge. Its activities link to nursery themes and include outdoor play when weather permits, creative tasks and a closing story.

The funding arrangements provide 15 nursery education hours from the term after a child’s third birthday. Eligible children can use an additional 15 funded hours in the afternoon wraparound session. Wraparound forms must be completed and returned before a child is accepted for those sessions, and families can arrange a visit through the office. Contact the school for current charges.
