Daily outdoor learning and a morning nursery session give Cranmore’s early years provision its shape. Play, conversation and adult teaching share the timetable, with afternoon care through Little Acorns for eligible children. This is provision within Cranmore Infant School on Northland Road, alongside the school’s distinct Little Acorns pre-school for children aged two to four.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good following its March 2022 inspection. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately graded nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning to communicate, manage feelings and move confidently with early reading, mathematics, creativity and exploring the world. Cranmore gives particular attention to language, emotional development and physical skills. Children have adult teaching alongside play activities they can return to, allowing them to practise rather than encounter something just once.
Songs, storytelling, recall games and conversations about numbers help children revisit learning. Outdoor learning is offered daily and planned alongside indoor activities. That makes outdoor time part of the learning day, with wellies needed for damp weather. Nursery children also use a book bag, linking the practical kit to their early experiences of books.
Art brings drawing, paint, cutting and modelling into the EYFS, supported by Kapow Primary Art & Design. These activities give small hands practice with materials while children explain their ideas. Jigsaw provides the approach to personal and social learning: stories, play and discussion introduce feelings and relationships. Early mathematics includes counting, patterns, shapes and practical comparisons of measurements, giving children something concrete to discuss.
Support for additional needs includes visual prompts, vocabulary preparation and adapted activities within the EYFS. Across the school, small intervention groups and individual support sit alongside external professional involvement when needed. Families of children receiving SEN support or with an EHCP have reviews each half term with the SENCO and class teacher, providing a regular opportunity to agree next steps together.
For younger children attending Little Acorns pre-school, a key person acts as the family’s main contact and follows the child’s development. Settling visits and an All About Me pack help staff learn about each child before attendance begins. Pre-school provides meals and snacks; families supply wipes and nappies, and staff work with parents on potty training when the child is ready.
Nursery children using before or after school care are cared for in the pre-school building. A light breakfast is served, with a light tea for children booked beyond 4.30pm. The March 2022 inspection recorded good behaviour among very young pre-school children and procedures to meet their welfare requirements.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Reception admissions process by its deadline; treat that application as a separate task from arranging nursery attendance.
Cranmore’s 2026 welcome programme included a class swap morning, when parents left children with their next teacher and class. This offered practice with a new group before September. Familiarisation and the allocation of a Reception place are separate matters.
Morning nursery runs from 9am to noon, with doors opening at 8.50am. Afternoon nursery wraparound runs from 1pm to 3pm. The Little Acorns afternoon provision is for children attending the morning school nursery who qualify for 30 hours of early years funding.
Wraparound bookings require a booking form, contact form and signed contract, plus a parental declaration for funded places. New funded bookings also require a non-refundable deposit, and monthly invoices are payable one month in advance. Send these to littleacorns@cranmore.solihull.sch.uk or take them to the school office. Contact the office on 0121 705 3443 for enquiries and current charges.
Uniform is optional in Foundation One, Cranmore’s nursery year. Children need pumps with a storage bag, a book bag and wellies; name clothing to help staff return it. For school snack time, send a small portion of fruit or vegetables in a named container and water in a clear, named bottle. Little Acorns pre-school has its own arrangements for providing food.
