Yoga, gardening and a hot lunch give Kingswood’s nursery day its own character. This is the nursery within Kingswood School in Shirley, Solihull, with entry from age three and attendance until four. Children must be out of nappies and toilet trained before joining. That entry condition matters when deciding whether a child is ready for the routine.
Small groups are used for teaching and activities, with flexible starting dates allowing children to join during the year. In the inspection completed in February 2025, Ofsted graded early years provision Good. This judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The morning has a clear structure: the entrance opens at 8:45am, registration follows at 8:50am and teaching and assemblies begin at 9:00am. Yoga and gardening add different kinds of activity to the early years programme, giving children opportunities for movement and exploration alongside classroom learning.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning with children’s physical, emotional and social development. Speaking and listening build confidence in expressing ideas; learning to recognise feelings and cooperate helps children take part in a group. Movement activities develop coordination, while books and early writing introduce literacy.
Counting, simple calculations and exploring measures and shapes introduce mathematical ideas. Children also investigate their surroundings, including technology, people and the natural world. Creative work includes dance, role play, music and art, so children have several ways to express what they think and feel.
In February 2025, the early years curriculum gave learning a clear purpose, with adults extending children’s vocabulary and encouraging curiosity. Predictable routines and reassuring adult relationships helped children feel secure. For parents, the emphasis on language matters: children are learning to explain their ideas as well as take part in activities.
Food is part of the session: children receive morning refreshments and a hot lunch. The nursery also has meals prepared by the catering team. This makes eating together part of the day’s routine, rather than something families need to arrange separately.
The school’s support team includes a special educational needs coordinator, an occupational therapist, a speech therapist and a specialist dyslexia teacher. Class teachers work with the coordinator on learning needs. Families whose children need additional support can discuss those needs during the initial admissions conversation.
Safeguarding procedures include staff checks, continuing training and a school office route to the safeguarding team. The school works with the Solihull Local Safeguarding Children Partnership and the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub when concerns require outside involvement.
Kingswood’s admissions arrangements explicitly offer nursery pupils a Reception place for the September after their fourth birthday. That is a specific admissions benefit, separate from the nursery’s curriculum and care.
Confirm with the school what paperwork is required for progression to Reception.
Attendance starts at five sessions each week, equivalent to five half-days or two and a half full days. Ten sessions constitute full-time attendance. Families can increase sessions at the beginning of a new term when their child is ready.
The nursery day runs from 8:45am to 3:30pm, with a 3:00pm Friday finish in the general routine. Breakfast club begins at 8:00am. After-school club runs until 5:30pm Monday to Thursday and until 5:00pm on Friday; out-of-school care requires advance arrangements.
Government-funded childcare hours are offered to eligible families. Meals, consumables, additional hours, trips and other services may attract extra charges; ask the school for current charges. Enquiries can go to info@kingswoodschool.co.uk, and the Business Manager can arrange a weekday tour.
