Nursery at St Andrew's Catholic Primary School

Catholic identity gives this nursery its setting and purpose: it belongs to St Andrew's Catholic Primary School on Windrush Close in Solihull. The school aims for an education shaped by Catholic belief and practice, and asks families to support that ethos. This matters when choosing the nursery as much as when choosing the school itself.
The provision is part of the primary school. In January 2024, Ofsted found that children in the early years responded positively to teachers' expectations, approached learning willingly and put effort into their work. That finding concerns early learning within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Understanding the world is one concrete strand of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) here. In plain language, this is learning about the world around children. Geography uses Kapow Primary, with early years activities linked to Development Matters and early learning goals. The intention is to build knowledge that children can draw on as their learning develops.
Classroom routines also have a visual element. Across the school, visual timetables show children the order of activities, helping those who find changes difficult to anticipate what comes next. Practical learning apparatus and visual resources are available in classrooms, with more specialised equipment provided where needed. These are tangible ways of making learning accessible rather than relying only on spoken instructions.
For a parent worried about development or learning, the first conversation is with the class teacher, who can involve the special educational needs coordinator (SENCo). Support follows a cycle of assessing needs, planning action, putting it into practice and reviewing progress with families. This gives parents a role in deciding the next steps.
Nursery children who struggle to access learning can be referred to the Specialist Inclusion Support Service Early Years team. Written parental consent is required, and the school helps families complete the accompanying questionnaires. This is a specifically nursery-related route to specialist advice.
School catering is provided by Aspens, with menus changing on a three-week rotation. Families needing a special diet must return a form to school. For multiple allergies, or allergies outside the specified allergen group, a packed lunch is required until a suitable menu has been agreed. The interim arrangement matters as much as the eventual meal choice.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority. For the September 2026 intake, the deadline was 15 January 2026; that application cycle has passed.
Under the 2025/2026 arrangements, nursery attendance conferred no admissions priority: applicants were assessed against the same criteria whether they attended nursery or not. Choosing the nursery therefore needs to be a decision about the provision itself, with Reception treated as a separate application.
Nursery applications go through the school office. General enquiries can be made by telephone on 0121 743 5675, by email to office@st-andrews.solihull.sch.uk or using the contact form. The address is Windrush Close, Solihull, B92 8QL. These routes give families a direct point of contact for applying and discussing their child's needs.
