Nursery learning and Dragons extended care work together here, giving families a school-based early-years day with scope to add care around it. At St George and St Teresa Catholic Primary School in Bentley Heath, the nursery belongs to a Catholic early-years team that plans jointly across nursery, Reception and Dragons. That shared planning connects education and care rather than treating the extended day as an unrelated service.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good at its inspection on 19 to 20 March 2024. This judgement covers the early-years provision within the school.
Letters, numbers and outdoor play are concrete parts of the early-years experience. In March 2024, children began exploring literacy and numeracy from the start, alongside learning and playing outdoors. The curriculum had a clear sequence, giving those first encounters with learning a structure children could build on.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) links the nursery's education with the additional provision in Dragons. For parents, the practical point is continuity: the teams plan together, and the extended provision follows the same early-years guidance alongside nursery. Extra hours therefore sit within a coordinated learning day.
Outdoor access is a useful physical feature. The school building occupies a single level, and each classroom has an external door leading outdoors at the same level. This connects classroom space with outside activity and is relevant for children with mobility needs.
Settling centres on getting to know each child and helping them understand the daily pattern. Staff's knowledge of individual children and support with everyday routines helped children adjust to school life. The March 2024 early-years findings describe successful settling, with children happy and safe.
Dragons includes meals within its care provision. Across the school, Aspens Services provides catering, with menus changing through a three-week rotation and seasonal updates. Families register dietary requirements by returning a special diets form, including needs arising from allergies, food intolerances, religion or ethical choices.
For additional needs, the school's Assess, Plan, Do, Review process involves parents in agreeing support and reviewing progress. A SEN Individual Provision Plan records the provision and intended outcomes. Before entry, the SEND coordinator meets parents of children already known to have SEND, providing a chance to discuss concerns and practical adjustments early. These are school-wide arrangements supporting the nursery's place within the wider team.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the normal deadline. Choosing nursery and applying for school are separate decisions.
Joint planning across nursery, Reception and Dragons provides continuity between the teams. That connection concerns children's experiences and support; it does not secure admission.
The first 15 funded early-education hours are delivered in nursery. A further 15 hours are provided through Dragons, subject to employment criteria, making the school's stated 30-hour arrangement a combination of nursery education and extended care.
Dragons serves nursery and primary-aged children during term time. Its daytime wraparound session runs from 11:50am to 3:30pm, followed by after-school care from 3:30pm to 6pm. Breakfast care is also offered. These options let families extend care beyond the nursery session.
