Listening, shared play and preparation for swimming gave Streetsbrook’s nursery a practical character at the inspection on 11 and 12 January 2023. This is the school’s own nursery in Shirley, on Ralph Road, with a choice of morning attendance or a longer day for children eligible for 30 hours. Both patterns require daily attendance, giving families a consistent weekly commitment.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 11 and 12 January 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school.
Routines begin early. In January 2023, nursery children understood what adults expected, responded to instructions and joined in play with other children. These are useful foundations for a group learning day: listening to an adult and cooperating with another child matter alongside the first steps towards reading.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) includes work on recognising sounds. In January 2023, children explored noises around them and started connecting sounds with letters. For parents, this is the beginning of learning how written language works, before children become independent readers. Preparation for swimming was another nursery example, helping children get ready before lessons began.
Early reading. In January 2023, delivery of the newly introduced phonics programme varied, and support for children slipping behind in reading needed sharper targeting. These concerns sit alongside the positive early years judgement and matter to families considering how the first foundations of reading develop.
Joining arrangements include collecting information about a child’s dietary requirements, their individual profile and English as an additional language. This gives families specific opportunities to share information relevant to their child’s care and participation from the start.
Special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are represented within the nursery. Its monitoring categories include six children at pre-monitoring, two at school monitoring and one with an education, health and care plan (EHCP). These are distinct categories rather than a nursery-wide percentage.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Solihull’s school admissions service is the route to use for that application.
Treat the two decisions separately when planning your child’s education. Choosing the nursery’s daily pattern concerns the time your child spends here now; applying for Reception concerns a later school place. Familiarity with the school should not be treated as an admission entitlement.
The 15-hour pattern runs from 8.45am to 11.45am every day. Children eligible for 30 hours attend from 8.45am until 2.45pm every day; accessing more than 15 hours requires an eligibility code. The longer pattern therefore depends on eligibility as well as whether its collection time suits your family.
For morning nursery collection, the front gate opens between 11.40am and noon. Its afternoon opening runs from 2.40pm to 3.30pm, covering the longer nursery day’s finish. These windows help parents plan collection around the nursery’s own hours.
Enquiries go to admissions@streetsbrook.solihull.sch.uk. The school office opens daily from 8.15am to 4.15pm, providing a separate contact window around nursery sessions.
