Caterpillars and Butterflies give the nursery its own identity within Tudor Grange Primary Academy Hockley Heath. Together they form Foundation Stage 1, the nursery part of the school's early years provision. This includes provision for two-year-olds, placing younger children within a primary school setting.
Language is a clear strength. At the March 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that early years staff supported communication and language development well, with positive exchanges between adults and children contributing to good progress. For parents, that makes conversation and interaction meaningful parts of the learning day.
Play sits alongside literacy, phonics and music. The April 2026 nursery timetable includes stories, library time and outdoor play, as well as repeated periods of continuous provision. Literacy, phonics and music feature alongside repeated periods of continuous provision. Snack and tidying also have their place, giving the day practical routines alongside its teaching.
The Early Years Foundation Stage, or EYFS, organises learning across seven areas. Movement, relationships and communication are the three prime areas: in parent language, children develop physical skills, learn to manage feelings and interact with others, and build their ability to understand and speak. These sit alongside mathematics, literacy, creative expression and learning about the world. Early learning therefore reaches beyond letters and numbers.
The school has a library space used by classes, and library time features in the nursery timetable. Outside play adds a different setting for activity. Music and stories bring further changes of pace, so the timetable contains several ways for children to engage rather than a succession of formal lessons.
Emotional support draws on the school's Thrive Approach. Staff receive training in Vital Relational Functions, which involves recognising a child's feelings and helping them return to social engagement. PACE, meaning Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy, is also used. These approaches give adults a framework for responding when a child needs help managing emotions.
For additional learning needs, the school follows a graduated cycle of assessing, planning, putting support into practice and reviewing it. The SENCo and senior leaders review provision. This makes checking and adjusting support part of the process, rather than treating an initial plan as fixed.
Parents can contact the class teacher through the school office. Parents' evenings and curriculum workshops provide further opportunities for discussion, while nursery photographs and class updates help families follow activities. Together, these offer both a route for raising concerns and a connection with classroom life.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the normal deadline. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
