At a Glance

Child-chosen play with adult guidance gives Ulverley’s early years its character. Children can select their learning through free flow, giving them a say in what they explore while adults guide the activity. The nursery belongs to Ulverley School on Rodney Road, Solihull.

There are 60 nursery places, although staffing commitments currently limit operation to 52 children. That operating number is reviewed periodically against the waiting list. The nursery offers funded provision from the term following a child’s third birthday; the school also has a separate Two Year Old Room. These are distinct parts of its early-years provision.

The Nursery Day

Free flow combines children’s choices with adult-guided play. For parents, that means learning includes opportunities for children to pursue an interest, rather than adults choosing every activity for them. It is a concrete feature of the foundation-stage approach here.

In March 2024, Ofsted found that early-years staff made learning accessible: a number-five activity combined examples, practical tasks and language to explain the concept. Children encountered the same mathematical idea in several forms. That gives a useful picture of how an abstract idea can become something a young child can explore and discuss.

Care and Support

Starting nursery is treated as a partnership with families. Ulverley aims to work with parents so that the move feels positive for their child. Before an agreed start date, families complete a personal-details form after accepting a place, giving the setting information about the child before attendance begins.

Support for special educational needs and disabilities starts in the early years. In March 2024, staff understood children’s needs and put suitable support in place promptly, drawing on specialists such as autism support services when needed. Families can contact SEND@ulverleyschool.co.uk about needs that classroom adaptations have not met, or to request professional referrals.

Parent feedback. In March 2024, feedback about children’s achievement varied across the school. This was a school-wide concern, so families should distinguish day-to-day messages from clear explanations of their child’s progress.

Nursery children can have school meals. For children who do not qualify for 30-hour funding, paid additional sessions exclude snacks, lunch and nappies. Families therefore need to account for those items separately from the session charge.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application directly to the local authority through the normal admissions process, meeting its deadline. Solihull’s local authority allocates places on the school’s behalf.

Nursery attendance gives no Reception priority under the stated criteria. Those criteria consider care status, exceptional social or medical circumstances, catchment residence, siblings and distance. Familiarity with the school does not replace the separate application.

Practical Information

The 15-hour offer has two session options: mornings run from 8:30am to 11:30am, and afternoons from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Flexible arrangements can be requested. Eligible children can take the 30-hour provision from 9am to 3pm during term time only, making the holiday boundary important for childcare planning.

Paid additional sessions are offered to children who are not eligible for 30-hour funding. Contact the school for current charges. An October open day gives parents an opportunity to view the nursery before applying.

The Early Years Application Form covers both the nursery and the Two Year Old Room. Staff acknowledge applications within five working days. Enquiries go to enquiry@ulverleyschool.co.uk or 0121 742 3251.
