Assessment and personalised learning give Beacon Hill’s nursery its distinctive purpose. Children aged 2½ to 5 follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with learning adapted to the individual rather than a single programme for everyone. The nursery forms the Early Years department of a special academy serving children with severe and complex learning difficulties.
The emphasis is on understanding each child and building learning around their needs. For families, that makes the assessment role central to the choice: this is specialist early education within a school, with a wider sensory and communication team supporting its work.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) frames learning across all areas, with activities adapted to each child. Communication and sensory learning have concrete support across the academy: Signalong, Eyegaze technology and music therapy provide ways to work on expression and explore sound. The nursery aims to engage children across all areas of learning through activities suited to them. Its early-years events have included World Book Day and Red Nose Day, bringing shared occasions into that individual approach.
Across the academy, the Sensory and Communication Team works with individual children, small groups and whole classes. Its approaches include Signalong, music therapy and Eyegaze technology. These are school-wide resources rather than a fixed nursery timetable: the useful distinction for parents is that specialist approaches can sit alongside the EYFS and personalised learning.
A parents room beside the nursery provides space for playgroup, stay and play, and meet-and-greet sessions. This gives families a place to take part in activities close to their child’s provision. Parents also receive an email each week, with texts and Facebook used for updates; workshops bring in other professionals to share information.
Specialist support extends beyond classroom activities. The academy’s staffing includes a therapist working part time on speech and language, two apprentices in that discipline, and a manager responsible for care and specialised support. Staff offer families advice and work alongside local vision and hearing services. Links with NHS dieticians and feeding and swallowing specialists connect the school’s support with children’s medical needs.
Aladdin’s Cave adds something practical for home. Parents and carers can borrow sensory resources matched to individual needs at no charge. Story sacks, switchable items and sensory toys are among the resources, allowing exploration and play to continue beyond school.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat the next placement as a separate admissions decision. Thurrock’s SEN team manages admissions locally; for children living elsewhere, requests must come directly from their home local authority to the academy. Families should work through that specialist route for their child’s next placement.
The main school is on Erriff Drive, South Ockendon, RM15 5AY. Enquiries can go to admin@beaconhill.thurrock.sch.uk or 01708 852006. Parents are welcome to visit, with a call beforehand recommended so the relevant member of staff can be available. That gives families a direct route to meet the team and discuss the provision.
