Stories and children’s individual interests give Richmond Avenue’s nursery its clearest character. This is the school’s own provision in Shoeburyness, with places for children aged 2 to 4, and it belongs to Southend East Community Academy Trust (SECAT). For families, the choice combines an early start within a primary school with the trust’s approach to recognising each child’s interests.
SECAT describes its nursery approach as treating children as individuals and helping them make choices for themselves. That gives independence a place alongside learning: the aim is for children to take an active part, rather than simply follow adults’ instructions.
Books provide a concrete picture of the early years day. At the inspection on 1 and 2 February 2022, Ofsted found that children in early years enjoyed stories read aloud by staff, drawing on varied books. Listening to an adult read is part of the learning experience here, giving children contact with stories before they can read independently.
Learning also follows a planned sequence from early years onwards. In February 2022, the curriculum developed children’s understanding through successive steps, connecting new learning with knowledge they already had.
The inspection also identified a school-wide weakness in checking retained knowledge in some subjects, which sometimes left tasks poorly matched to pupils’ needs. This was a concern across the school, rather than a finding stated specifically about nursery activities.
Individual interests are part of SECAT’s stated approach to care as well as learning. The trust says its nurseries respond to different ways of learning and regard children as capable of making their own choices. For a parent, that emphasis makes the child’s preferences and growing independence relevant to the relationship with the nursery team.
Attending Richmond Avenue’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Choosing the nursery and securing a school place are separate decisions; nursery attendance should never be treated as an offer of Reception admission.
Funded and self-funded places are offered across SECAT’s nurseries. The funding options are 15 hours a week through the universal entitlement, alongside 30-hour funding for eligible families. Eligibility matters for the longer funded option, so the two arrangements should not be treated as interchangeable.
