Granted city status in January 2022, Southend-on-Sea is a densely settled coastal city on the north shore of the Thames Estuary, roughly 40 miles east of London. The city's roots lay in fishermen's huts and a farmstead at the southern edge of Prittlewell; the 1790s saw the first formal buildings on the emerging High Street, and growth accelerated in the 19th century following a royal visit from Princess Caroline and the construction of both the pier and railway. Services on Greater Anglia from Southend Central station reach London Liverpool Street in around 50 minutes.
