At a Glance

Five room bases take children from babyhood to preschool, with a bike track, reading pods and a forest school area giving the older children plenty to explore. Temple Sutton Early Years is the nursery provision at Temple Sutton Primary School on Eastern Avenue, Southend-on-Sea, caring for children aged 0–4.

Daisies serves ages 0–2, Primrose ages 2–3, Bluebells rising threes, and Sunflowers and Poppies ages 3–4. Capacity is room-specific: up to 18 children in Daisy, 26 in Primrose, 28 in Bluebell, 32 in Sunflower and 28 in Poppy at any one time. These are room limits, rather than attendance figures.

At the school’s inspection on 10 and 11 January 2023, Ofsted graded early years provision Good. That is the school’s early years judgement.

The Nursery Day

The rooms change with the children. Daisy has a main play space, a messy play area and an astro turf garden accessible throughout the year. Primrose adds two classroom areas and an enclosed garden. Bluebell combines learning areas with its own garden inside a larger outdoor space; staff adapt routines to the room’s mixed ages, and messy play gives children opportunities to explore.

For preschoolers, Sunflowers and Poppies combine class bases and formal learning spaces with mud kitchens, growing areas and sand and water construction. Children can use bikes, scooters and trikes on the race track, while reading pods and a forest school area provide different settings for activity. There is space for movement and quieter exploration.

A full-time teacher leads the preschool provision and oversees the early years curriculum. Its three prime areas build foundational knowledge and skills for starting school, alongside four specific areas. Read Write Inc introduces initial sounds when children are ready, in five-minute sessions: early reading work comes in short bursts.

Curriculum planning. In January 2023, some subjects needed clearer sequencing of essential knowledge and vocabulary, including in early years. Families should weigh that concern alongside the early years grade.

Care and Support

Daily care has dedicated space. Daisy includes a sleeping area and separate milk kitchen; parents provide nappies, wipes, comfort objects and a labelled bottle containing formula or water. Staff prepare bottles, and snacks are supplied during the day. An electronic daily record helps parents follow their baby’s day.

Primrose has a cosy corner and sleep area. Staff work with parents on toilet training, and information from the health visitor’s development check between ages two and three can inform support. Bluebell has three toilets, handwashing facilities and nappy-changing space, with mini dining tables in its kitchen area for meals and snacks.

Communication support includes Wellcomm screening and help for parents seeking professional referrals. The nursery is Makaton friendly, uses Tapestry for individual learning journals and employs a qualified counsellor to support nursery parents and children as needed. These give families several ways to share needs and follow development.

The staff workforce is fully qualified. Ratios vary by room: one adult to three children in Daisy, one to four in Primrose, either one to four or one to eight in Bluebell depending on age, and one to eight in Sunflowers and Poppies. Millie’s Mark accreditation includes paediatric first-aid training for all staff.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal school admissions process; applications can be made through Southend’s online admissions service.

The nursery team organises a transition programme towards the end of children’s time there, preparing them for formal education. That preparation is separate from the allocation of a school place.

Practical Information

Childcare operates from 8am to 6pm, with staff available Monday to Friday. Daisy bookings allow parents to choose suitable days and times. For Sunflowers and Poppies, funded hours can be used across mornings or afternoons, or combined into an all-day session.

Funding depends on eligibility. Qualifying children from nine months can receive up to 15 hours, while provision for children over two includes 15 or 30 hours for working parents. Fees are payable in advance. Contact the nursery for current charges.
