Children’s interests help shape the learning at Bishop Bronescombe’s nursery. Teaching adapts to their development and emerging themes, with staff choosing skills to match each child’s next steps. That gives the provision a clear character: the curriculum responds to the children taking part.
The nursery belongs to Bishop Bronescombe CofE School in St Austell. At the Ofsted inspection on 6 and 7 July 2022, early years provision was graded Good. This was an early years judgement within the school inspection.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) gives learning its breadth. Its seven areas cover speaking and listening, movement, relationships and emotions, reading and writing, number, exploring the world and creative expression. For parents, this means the curriculum extends beyond early literacy and mathematics to children’s physical and social development.
Planning starts with each child’s stage of development. Staff use emerging interests to adjust teaching and identify what to work on next, rather than treating the group as though everyone needs the same task. In July 2022, early years staff planned learning around the curriculum and knew the children well. Children were settled and attentive.
Books provide a practical link between nursery and home. The nursery’s home library lets families borrow reading material, while staff encourage parents to talk about story characters and what happens to them. Suggested number activities at home include counting toys and playing snakes and ladders, making mathematical language part of familiar play.
Religious education in EYFS explores beliefs through stories, significant objects and visits to places of worship. Children discuss their experiences, explore through their senses and pose questions. This brings both religious and non-religious perspectives into early learning.
Individual development also guides the nursery’s approach to support. Its curriculum takes account of where children are in their learning, providing a starting point for choosing their next steps.
Across the school, SEND support includes identifying needs early, adapting strategies and reducing obstacles to learning. Parents help establish goals and review progress. A SEND coordinator, inclusion team and Family Liaison Officer provide routes for discussing learning needs and family support; these are school-wide roles.
Communication with parents uses My Child at School (MCAS), accessible through an app or browser. Parents receive login details when their child joins the school, giving families a shared channel for school communication.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two distinct decisions.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 01726 64322 or email bbr-secretary@rainbowacademy.org.uk. The school is on Boscoppa Road in St Austell.
