Children’s interests set the direction at Bugle Nursery, with changing seasons and the Autumn topic Marvellous Me giving learning a familiar starting point. The nursery forms part of Bugle School on Fore Street in Bugle, near St Austell, and includes provision for two-year-olds. Its focus is on the early foundations: relationships, communication and learning through play.
Early years provision was graded Good at the Ofsted inspection on 19 and 20 July 2022. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings children’s care, development and learning together within one framework. At Bugle, planning responds to what interests the children. Autumn and Winter provide seasonal themes, while Christmas gives another connection to events children recognise. Topics change to suit the group rather than dictating an identical programme for each cohort.
Marvellous Me starts with getting to know one another and exploring children’s identities. This gives relationships a place in the curriculum alongside learning about the surrounding world. Across early years, children have extended time for play and opportunities to pursue their ideas, with learning provision both inside and outdoors. Forest school sessions, visits and trips also form part of the early years approach.
Language is a clear thread. In July 2022, nursery children memorised rhymes and songs and began identifying sounds and letters, building foundations for reading. The early years learning environment supported children’s engagement, and staff understood individual needs closely.
An EYFS lead, nursery lead and teaching assistant make up the nursery team. For children needing help with speech and understanding, Early Talk Boost targets three- and four-year-olds. Selected children take part in three practitioner-led sessions each week, lasting 15–20 minutes during story or circle time. Activities work on vocabulary and conversation, giving language support a defined place within their routine.
Big Brush Club adds supervised toothbrushing to the early years provision. The nursery aims to establish dental-care habits while children are young. Families preparing for nursery can also receive toilet-training guidance and contact the school for support with questions.
Additional needs are explored through staff observations, assessments and conversations with parents. The SENDCo works with teaching assistants and teachers to plan individual support, with agencies including Hearing Support Service and Speech and Language Therapy involved across the school. In July 2022, children with SEND could access ambitious learning from the early years onwards.
Attending Bugle Nursery does not guarantee a place in Bugle School’s Reception. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the relevant deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as two separate decisions.
Nursery enquiries begin with an Expression of Interest application form, after which a team member contacts the family. Visits can be arranged through the school office. Contact details are 01726 850420 and hello@bugleschool.org.uk.
Funding depends on eligibility. The universal entitlement for three- and four-year-olds begins in the term after their third birthday and provides 15 hours. Eligible working families can access 30 hours, while some two-year-olds qualify for 15 hours through additional-support criteria. Funding covers up to 15 or 30 hours weekly across 38 weeks. Working families need to keep their eligibility details confirmed and agree their use of funded hours with the provider. For the universal entitlement, families supply a birth certificate and sign a declaration.
