Morning sessions, stories and a focus on language give Featherstone Wood’s nursery its shape, with a longer funded pattern available for eligible families. Children can join from the term following their third birthday and stay until they reach the stage of applying for Reception.
This is the nursery within Featherstone Wood Primary School on Featherston Road, Stevenage. The wider school has extensive grounds and a large building. In October 2022, Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good; that judgement covers early years within the school.
Talking, listening and learning to do things independently are central to the early years experience. In October 2022, children listened to stories, had time for exploratory play and were encouraged to tackle things for themselves. For a parent, that means early learning includes both adult guidance and opportunities for children to make their own choices.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for nursery learning. Here, the emphasis on communication gives a concrete sense of what that means for a young child: listening to a story, developing language and becoming more independent through play. White Rose Maths is used from EYFS onwards, alongside an approach that moves between practical objects, pictures and abstract ideas. Objects and images give children ways to work with an idea before relying on symbols alone.
Classrooms across the school have visual schedules, labelled prompts and quiet reflection spaces. These offer ways to understand routines and take a pause. The distinction matters: in October 2022, checks on what children had retained were inconsistent, leaving some learning gaps unidentified. Checking learning. Early years assessment needed greater consistency and extra opportunities to practise where knowledge was insecure. Families should keep children’s next learning steps part of conversations with staff.
Key persons concentrated on children’s speaking and listening development in October 2022. Language support also has named tools: Wellcomm, Word Aware and Early Talk Boost. Adults in early years have received training in supporting language development, and an independent speech and language therapist provides targeted help for children whose needs fall below the NHS referral threshold. This gives families a route to support before that threshold is met.
For children receiving SEN support, individual plans follow the Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle. Parents help develop them alongside staff, and reviews happen at least termly. Specialist referrals follow discussion with families and require parental consent. Communication includes Marvellous Me messages, calls and meetings with the class teacher or SENCo, giving parents several ways to discuss progress.
A fruit or vegetable snack is provided without charge, with examples including carrots, apples, oranges and bananas. Children attending the longer nursery pattern can have a charged school lunch, paid through Arbor. HCL special menus cater for allergies or intolerances where children meet the qualifying criteria; applications require medical evidence. Packed lunches must exclude nuts, and grapes for younger children should be sliced lengthways.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must submit a separate application through Hertfordshire’s local authority admissions route.
For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle has passed. The school office can help families complete a Reception application.
Transition sessions support children and families as they prepare for full-time school. This preparation is separate from allocating a place: familiarity with the school does not replace the Reception application.
The 15-hour funded pattern runs across five mornings each week during term time, over 38 weeks. Nursery mornings are 8.45am to 11.45am. Eligible working parents may access the 30-hour pattern: Monday to Thursday, 8.45am to 3.15pm, followed by Friday, 8.45am to 11.45am. The shorter Friday needs factoring into childcare arrangements.
Additional hours require advance booking through Arbor and carry a charge. Parents usually supply nappies and wipes; a contribution may be requested if the school supplies them. Activities outside those needed to deliver EYFS can also attract charges. Contact the school for current charges.
Nursery applications go directly to the school office, which supplies the application form. Visits can be arranged through the office on 01438 235550 or by emailing admin@featherstonewood.herts.sch.uk.
