Acorn gives Moss Bury’s nursery its own identity within the school’s early years team, with a nursery teacher and nursery nurse. Based on Webb Rise in Stevenage, this is the nursery attached to Moss Bury Primary School and Nursery. For its September 2026 intake, the eligible birth dates ran from 1 September 2022 to 31 August 2023.
Two session patterns shape the day: a morning finishing at 11:45am, or a longer day ending at 3:15pm for families eligible for 30 hours. Both begin at 8:45am. The difference matters practically: the longer option includes lunchtime, while the morning session finishes before lunch.
Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In parent terms, this framework brings children’s learning and development together with their health and safety. Moss Bury aims to develop curiosity and independence alongside the foundations for reading, writing and mathematics.
Mossy Explorer adds a named programme that includes nursery challenges. Children receive fresh challenges each term and bring their work to their teacher each week. A Mossy Explorer Day provides time to look back over completed work, with successes gathered in a Mossy Explorer Knowledge Organiser. Completing the term’s tasks earns a Mossy Explorer Badge. The school intends the programme to develop confidence, responsibility and resilience; for parents, it also creates a specific connection between activities at home and learning at nursery.
A nursery teacher and nursery nurse make up the Acorn staffing structure. Every member of the early years staff has paediatric first aid training, a concrete qualification relevant to caring for young children. A Nursery Social Story is provided to help families prepare for starting, giving parents a resource to use before that change in routine.
For children staying through lunchtime under the 30-hour arrangement, supervision at lunch is free, but families supply a packed lunch. Lunch preparation therefore remains part of the parent’s daily routine.
Support for additional needs sits within the school’s SEND arrangements. Parents can raise concerns with the class teacher or SENCo. The school assesses a child’s needs and strengths, works to reduce obstacles to learning, and involves parents in decisions about education. It also undertakes to keep them informed about progress and needs. A Family Support Worker provides another point of contact for families seeking support or help reaching other services.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Hertfordshire County Council’s Admission Team, rather than treating the nursery application as covering both stages. For September 2026 Reception entry, the closing date was 14 January 2026. That cycle is past; families applying for a later intake should use the normal Reception application route and its applicable deadline.
Attendance pattern. Children are expected to attend their chosen session every day. This is a regular attendance commitment, so the morning or longer-day pattern needs to fit the family’s routine.
