Ladybirds, pond visits and sand-and-water activities give this nursery its own identity within The Giles Infant and Nursery School in Stevenage. It caters for children aged three to four, usually starting in September following their third birthday. Entry during the year is possible in the term after turning three, subject to space and the headteacher’s discretion.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 21 and 22 February 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school.
Sand and water, a pond visit and the lifecycle of a frog are among the Ladybirds learning examples. These give parents concrete starting points for talking with their child about nursery: materials to explore, creatures to notice and changes in the natural world. The Nursery Sensory Garden adds a named outdoor feature to this picture.
Stories and celebrations also feature. Nursery examples include Humpty Dumpty, Incy Wincy Spider and Lunar New Year, alongside Maths Week and World Book Day. The combination brings familiar rhymes, books and seasonal themes into the nursery’s activities. Phase One Phonics and nursery-rhyme home learning provide a connection with learning at home, giving families something specific to share beyond the session.
Early years practitioner and SEN support roles form part of the nursery team. Across the school, the inclusion team brings together a special educational needs coordinator and a Family Support Worker. Classroom adjustments are supported by the SENCo, who also involves outside agencies for more complex needs. The Family Support Worker helps with children’s wellbeing and family concerns.
Where a child needs support beyond ordinary classroom adaptations, an Assess, Plan, Do, Review Record tracks the help provided and progress towards individual outcomes. Parents can discuss concerns at inclusion-team drop-ins held at least once each half-term, or arrange an appointment through the office.
Safeguarding. In February 2023, school-wide safeguarding was effective, but some child-protection records and responses to concerns needed greater rigour. No pupils had been harmed by these weaknesses; leaders acted promptly. This is relevant context for families considering the nursery.
A nursery place does not guarantee admission to Reception at Giles. Families must make a separate Reception application through Hertfordshire County Council, following its application timetable and closing date. Nursery enrolment is therefore one decision; applying for school is another.
When applications exceed places, the county admissions team uses admission criteria to allocate them. Keep the Reception application in your family calendar even while your child is attending Ladybirds.
Subject to space, children aged three to four can receive 15 funded hours each week across 38 weeks of the year. Some parents qualify for another 15 funded hours through the 30-hour scheme. Eligibility matters when planning childcare around work.
Nursery applications go directly to the school. Completed forms can be emailed to nurseryadmissions@gilesinfants.herts.sch.uk, posted or handed in. For enquiries, contact admin@gilesinfants.herts.sch.uk or telephone 01438 359 747. The school is on Durham Road, Stevenage, SG1 4JQ.
