Nursery at Adswood Primary School

At a Glance

Play, practical challenges and learning to recognise feelings give Adswood’s nursery its character. This is a nursery class within Adswood Primary School on Garners Lane in Stockport, with 60 part-time places. Children can start from three; the 15-hour free entitlement places are usually offered in September before their fourth birthday.

Ofsted records Good for nursery provision and no single overall school grade. The nursery team includes a teacher, a higher level teaching assistant and a nursery nurse.

The Nursery Day

Children combine activities guided by adults with play and choices of their own. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the framework organising their learning: all seven learning areas are woven into activities indoors and outdoors. Practical exploration, conversation and returning to an activity to practise give children different ways to develop understanding.

Daily independent access to both indoor and outdoor learning means exploration extends beyond the classroom. The Willow Garden has hosted Nursery Stay and Play, while other nursery experiences have included a café trip and a tea party. These are concrete examples of learning through shared experiences, rather than a promise of a fixed outings timetable.

Enjoy Believe Achieve (EBA) Awards add practical life skills to the early years curriculum. Children work towards Be an adventurer, Be a performer and Be independent through exploration, play and adult guidance. Each award contains three challenges, giving children manageable steps towards a goal. Creative work also includes experimenting with combinations of materials and ingredients, building structures and testing how they work. Trying, changing and trying again are part of the learning.

Care and Support

Settling starts before the first session. Foundation Stage staff make home visits, and transition sessions involve children and parents. Extra visits can be arranged where a child has specific transition needs, allowing familiarisation to be adjusted to the child.

The Colour Monster introduces early years children to talking about feelings. Mindspace and interactive displays support this work before children move towards Zones of Regulation, which teaches ways to recognise emotions and regain calm. The inclusion room is another space children can use for emotional coaching.

For additional needs, the class teacher and SEND lead plan support with families. SEN Support Plans follow Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycles, with reviews at least three times a year. Across the school, a speech and language therapist works two days per week. Seesaw provides communication and weekly home learning advice, while parent meetings and an annual written report provide further opportunities to discuss progress.

Lunch can be a packed lunch or a hot meal cooked in the school kitchen by Totally Local. Menus cater for dietary requirements. Nursery children are excluded from the universal infant free school meals offer, so families should distinguish meal arrangements from funded nursery hours. Packed lunches must exclude nut products and grapes, and lunch boxes should carry the child’s name.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate online application through Stockport MBC. For September 2025 entry, the Reception deadline was 15 January 2025; that was a past admissions cycle.

Preparation for the next class is a separate matter. Summer transition sessions introduce children to their future teacher, with a One Page Profile and transition plan passing on information about each child. Parents can meet the next teacher at an Open Evening. Children with a high level of need and an EHCP have additional transition reviews.

Practical Information

The nursery has a part-time booking model, with 15-hour free entitlement places. The nursery’s end-of-day time is 3pm. Applications for nursery places are made online through Stockport MBC.

For an appointment with Foundation Stage staff, contact the school office on 0161 483 5003. This gives prospective parents a route to discuss joining and their child’s needs. Meal payments use Parent Pay; contact the school for current charges. A labelled waterproof coat is part of the school’s clothing requirements, supporting children’s daily outdoor learning.
