Stories, songs and rhymes give Bredbury Green’s nursery a clear starting point for learning, alongside mainstream places and specialist provision for children with complex needs. Children can join from age 2+. At the school’s Clapgate site in Romiley, the nursery has an admission number of 40 mainstream places and 12 resourced places. These are distinct parts of the provision, rather than a single undifferentiated intake.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 25 and 26 June 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Development Matters guides early years learning towards the Early Learning Goals. For parents, the practical emphasis is on children developing skills through their experiences, with learning taking place outdoors as well as inside. The school involves children in shaping curriculum content around their interests and backgrounds, giving their questions a part in what they learn.
Shared reading has a clear nursery role. In June 2024, children enjoyed familiar tales, singing and rhyming activities, building foundations for later phonics learning. This gives early literacy a social dimension: children explore language together before moving towards formal reading instruction.
Independence is another strand. Children choose activities and take on challenges within the learning environment, rather than relying entirely on adult direction. In June 2024, early years children showed sustained attention, persistence and highly developed learning habits. Those behaviours matter alongside curriculum content: being able to concentrate and keep trying helps children make use of the activities around them.
Specialist nursery provision caters for children with complex needs. At the June 2024 inspection, it accommodated up to 12 nursery-aged children, and most of those attending had an education, health and care plan. Families considering this provision are therefore looking at a distinct support arrangement within the school.
For children needing support beyond everyday classroom teaching, individual provision maps set out their needs. Teachers review support with parents through a cycle of planning, putting help into practice and checking its effect. This gives families an ongoing role in decisions, rather than a single conversation when a concern first arises.
The school’s teachers receive internal SEN training, supported by the SENCO; teaching assistants also have training to deliver SEN provision. The classroom teacher is the first contact for family queries. All staff receive safeguarding training annually, and families can raise concerns about circumstances at home as well as school.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives priority for one at Bredbury Green. A separate application is required. Families apply online through Stockport Local Authority’s admissions process, so choosing this nursery must be treated as a decision about the nursery years themselves.
For children with SEND, transition support between school years includes teacher handovers, photographs in individual transition books and lessons with the incoming teacher near the summer term’s end. These arrangements help children prepare for change; they confer no admissions advantage.
Families have flexibility in using their free 15 hours. Eligible children may receive up to 30 hours a week in term time. Extended-hours nursery places are limited and allocated using additional criteria, including catchment, siblings and parents’ working arrangements. Eligibility for extended childcare therefore does not by itself secure the additional nursery hours here.
Visits outside open-day dates can be arranged through the school office. For nursery enquiries, contact admin@bredburygreenprimary.com or telephone 0161 430 3078. This provides a direct route to discussing the provision and arranging a visit with your child.
