At a Glance

An EYFS outdoor classroom and practical goals such as managing cutlery give Cheadle Heath’s nursery a character built around learning and growing independence. This is the nursery class within Cheadle Heath Primary School on Edgeley Road in Stockport, with 40 part-time places and entry from age three.

In March 2026, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately graded nursery. Its strongest concrete features were an outdoor environment that extended learning, purposeful activities and caring relationships between adults and children.

The Nursery Day

Language and early reading shape the learning. In March 2026, staff used everyday opportunities to introduce vocabulary, while children practised sounds and letters throughout the day. Additional help supported children who needed it. This gives early reading repeated attention rather than confining practice to a single activity.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum builds knowledge and skills through planned activities, with children’s interests and needs influencing the sequence. Books also have a clear place: early years children encounter texts intended to spark an interest in reading. The outdoor classroom adds another learning space. In March 2026, the outdoor area helped children extend what they were learning through the curriculum.

Independence is made concrete through small targets shared between home and school. Handling cutlery and doing up shoes are examples, giving families everyday skills to practise together. Half-termly stay-and-play sessions let parents join their child in the classroom, talk with staff and see the learning wall. They offer a useful connection between activities at school and learning at home.

Care and Support

Before children start school, families can take part in an introduction to forest school and two Mouse Club sessions. These activities bring children and parents into the early years setting together, making the move into school a shared experience.

Relationships support settling. In March 2026, adults formed close connections with families, and children settled promptly because they felt secure with staff. Early years staff also worked with parents and relevant professionals to recognise additional needs early. The school’s SENDCo provides a contact for families with concerns about their child’s support.

Communication continues through a weekly learning update on Class Dojo, alongside classroom notices and two parents’ evenings each year. For younger children, discussions following a disagreement use questions about feelings and how to put things right. This gives children a way to discuss an incident and consider a different response.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate online application through Stockport Council’s admissions service.

For the September 2026 Reception intake, the closing date was 15 January 2026. That deadline has passed. The school-start activities described above support familiarity and settling; they should be understood separately from the allocation of a Reception place.

Practical Information

The 15-hour place follows one of two patterns: Monday and Tuesday, 9am to 3.15pm, plus Wednesday, 9am to 11.30am; or Wednesday, 12.25pm to 3.15pm, plus Thursday and Friday, 9am to 3.15pm. These are fixed combinations to consider against a family’s weekly schedule.

Subject to availability, families can use 30-hour funding for a full-time place or pay for additional hours. Sunrise and Sunset Clubs accept nursery children for an extra charge, but spaces are limited and cannot be guaranteed. Contact the school for current charges.

Nursery applications go online through Stockport Council. For enquiries, contact the school office at admin@cheadleheathprimary.co.uk or on 0161 428 2476.
