Stories, seeds and outdoor discovery give Ladybrook’s nursery its character. Based in the Foundation Stage Building at Ladybrook Primary School in Bramhall, it takes children from the term after their third birthday until Reception age. Families can choose part-time provision or a full-time place during term time, with additional sessions subject to availability.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 23 and 24 July 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The nursery-specific findings give it substance: children enjoyed familiar rhymes and stories, and began learning about letters and their sounds.
Learning starts with children’s interests and developmental needs. Teachers plan around those starting points within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework used for the nursery curriculum. In practice, this means that an individual child’s development shapes the learning planned for them.
The Foundation Stage Building has indoor learning provision and a large equipped outdoor area. Outdoor learning continues in different weather conditions, so a hooded waterproof coat is part of the practical kit. The 2025–2026 nursery class page also lists a Skylark Forest School Trip, extending exploration beyond the school site.
Earlier examples show how stories and practical activity connect. During 2024–2025, children planted seeds, compared different seeds and tasted fruit and vegetables alongside Oliver’s Vegetables and The Enormous Turnip. Ice and snow prompted investigation of melting and freezing. These are concrete ways to connect a story or a seasonal change with something children can handle, observe and discuss.
Reading begins in nursery, with Oxford Reading Tree among the school’s reading resources. In July 2024, children’s enjoyment of retelling stories and rhymes accompanied their introduction to letter sounds. Books and spoken language therefore have a clear place alongside outdoor exploration.
Parents receive written updates each term, can communicate online and meet nursery staff to discuss development. Workshops address different areas of children’s development. These give families several ways to connect home experiences with nursery learning.
Preparation for joining includes transition sessions. Children who need additional help can receive a booklet showing their teachers and learning surroundings, while the headteacher and SENDCo can meet parents beforehand. In July 2024, nursery children also helped newcomers by sharing memories of their own experiences.
Additional needs are addressed through the school’s SEND arrangements: parents and relevant agencies help create a support plan, with the class teacher leading and the SENDCo advising. Teddy Gym is a named programme for foundation-stage children’s movement and coordination. Support can therefore include physical development as well as learning targets.
Hot lunches are cooked daily in the school’s own kitchen by Totally Local; children can alternatively bring a healthy packed lunch, excluding sweets and fizzy drinks. For children attending the Out of School Club, the after-school session includes a snack and fruit. The club also has its own keyworker system.
Attending Ladybrook nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Primary admission is separate: families must apply again through Stockport MBC’s online admissions process by the normal Reception deadline. Treat choosing nursery and securing a school place as two separate decisions.
Transition support serves a different purpose. The school uses sessions for children joining or changing year groups, and can provide photographic booklets where needed. These help children prepare for a change of classroom; they do not replace the admissions application.
The nursery’s school-day hours are 8.55am to 3.20pm. Flexible part-time attendance and extra sessions sit alongside full-time term-time provision. The universal entitlement is 15 hours each week during term time; eligible families can use 30-hour funding for a full-time place, subject to availability, or purchase extra hours. Contact the school for current charges.
Wraparound availability. Nursery children can attend Ladybrook Out of School Club, but places are limited and cannot be guaranteed. Its morning session runs from 7.45am to 8.55am; afternoons finish at 6pm, with a 5pm Friday finish. Secure the required club sessions before relying on them for work arrangements.
Tours can be arranged through the office on 0161 439 8444. Nursery applications go through Stockport MBC. The school’s uniform requirements include a purple logo sweatshirt or cardigan and a logo bookbag; clothing should be labelled.
Children can join from the term after they turn three, with nursery provision continuing until Reception age.
