Stories, rhymes and drama give this nursery its clearest character: young children encounter books through performance as well as listening. The provision belongs to St Paul's Church of England Primary School Brinnington, on Brinnington Rise in Stockport, where the school age range begins at three. It is a school nursery within a Church of England setting.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good following its inspection on 14 and 15 May 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. For parents, the useful detail is the combination of relationships and early reading experiences behind that judgement.
Stories are a concrete part of the Nursery Year. Children hear rhymes, and adults use drama to animate books and make reading enjoyable. This gives children another way into a story: characters and events can be acted out rather than encountered only on a page. The emphasis is on enjoying reading from an early stage.
There is an important qualification to that picture. In May 2024, extra phonics help for children in early years and pupils in key stage 1 was insufficient to close reading gaps. Some children therefore took longer to become fluent readers. This finding applies across those groups, rather than establishing that nursery children follow a particular phonics programme. Families should weigh the enjoyable introduction to stories alongside that concern about support when reading becomes difficult.
Relationships were a strength in early years in May 2024. Children developed secure connections with adults and friendships with other children, helping them begin school life positively. For a young child, those connections matter alongside the learning activities: becoming comfortable with the people around them is part of starting school.
Breakfast Club adds a practical care option for nursery-age children. Familiar staff supervise breakfast and morning games, with children choosing from foods including cereals, fruit and bagels. Activities allow children to make choices for themselves. Background music, with occasional piano playing, accompanies the morning.
Welcoming Wednesday's also gives parents and carers a chance to share breakfast with their children and meet staff and other families. Adults leave by 8.35am so staff can prepare children for class.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. St Paul's follows Stockport Local Authority admission arrangements, so the council's arrangements govern the application rather than attendance at nursery alone.
The school's Church status does not bring separate admission arrangements. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as two distinct decisions.
Breakfast Club starts at 8.00am and accepts children from nursery age; advance booking is unnecessary. Payment is through ParentPay before attendance. Ask the school for current charges.
