Nursery at Stella Maris School

Play and practical learning give Stella Maris nursery its character, with a designated Pre-Prep outdoor play area extending activity beyond the classroom. This is the nursery within the independent school in Heaton Mersey, Stockport, serving children aged three and four. It sits within the school's Pre-Prep department, rather than operating as a separate childcare setting.
The attendance pattern is decisive: a full school week during term time. For families seeking a consistent daily routine, that provides a clear structure; it also means committing to five days. Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good at its inspection on 1 to 3 October 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Practical experiences are the starting point for learning. The Pre-Prep curriculum follows the seven areas associated with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In parent language, these bring together talking and listening, movement, relationships and emotions, alongside early reading, number work, creative expression and discovering how the world works. Children learn through play, with activities taking place indoors and in their designated outdoor space. Independence is an explicit aim.
French adds another strand to the day, with specialist teaching extending to Pre-Prep. The Creative Curriculum includes practical art across all age groups, while every child has a weekly class music lesson. These give young children opportunities to explore language, making and sound alongside their early learning.
The environment includes a nursery classroom within the school building. Beyond ordinary classroom activities, Pre-Prep children took an end-of-year trip to BeWILDerwood in Cheshire in July 2024, with play and adventure forming the outing. It is a concrete example of learning and shared experiences extending beyond the school grounds.
Relationships are a strength supported by the October 2024 early years findings: children developed confidence in their teachers quickly, and adults guided learning effectively. The Pre-Prep leader is a qualified teacher and Forest School Leader, with specialist interests in art, phonics and early reading. That combines classroom teaching with expertise in practical and outdoor learning.
Settling includes contact with families. An informal meeting with the class teacher takes place near the beginning of the school year, giving parents time to raise questions. Pre-Prep assessment is ongoing, and parents can speak with teachers before or after school or arrange a longer appointment. Older school pupils also act as buddies to help younger children settle.
Lunch requires preparation at home. Families provide a packed meal, a healthy morning snack and a water bottle; children eat in classrooms under supervision. Pre-Prep children may receive milk after morning break, and parents can opt out when joining.
Support plans for additional needs involve the class teacher, school leadership and parents, with outside agencies consulted if further help is needed. Early identification of SEND. In October 2024, the school's identification systems and expertise needed strengthening, delaying recognition and support for some potential needs. This school-wide concern matters to families whose child may need additional help from the outset.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat Reception admission as a separate application step, following the applicable route and deadline.
There is also a longer-term expectation to weigh up: the nursery booking terms expect children joining Pre-Prep to continue through the school to Year 6. That expectation is distinct from a guarantee of admission to Reception. Families should consider the nursery as part of a proposed continuing school relationship when deciding whether this attendance model suits them.
Only full-time nursery places are offered: Monday to Friday, 9am to 3.05pm, during term time. Morning supervision starts at 8am, costs nothing and requires no advance booking. After-school care is charged separately and runs until 5.30pm. This extends the working day for families who need it.
The Pre-Prep funding offer introduced from Easter 2025 covers 30 hours a week from age three through the term in which a child turns five. Confirm eligibility and current charges with the school before committing. Food preparation remains the family's responsibility through the packed-lunch arrangement.
Personal tours and informal taster mornings or afternoons can be arranged through the office on 0161 432 0532 or office@stellamarisschool.co.uk. A taster gives a prospective child an opportunity to meet children and experience school activities before joining.
