Communication, early writing and the beginnings of reading give Vale View’s Nursery class its clearest character. The provision sits within the early years at Vale View Primary School in North Reddish, Stockport. Its focus is on building the foundations children need for learning, with reading beginning in Nursery rather than waiting until later schooling.
At the school’s Ofsted inspection on 2 and 3 July 2024, early years provision was graded Good. This is a judgement of the school’s early years provision, rather than a separate nursery rating. The early years findings give parents a useful picture of teaching: activities developed children’s communication and early writing, and staff tackled gaps in children’s knowledge promptly.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the curriculum framework. For parents, the concrete emphasis here is on children developing their language and taking their first steps in writing. In July 2024, teaching used activities that engaged children in these areas. These are foundations for expressing ideas as well as beginning to record them.
Many children started early years with gaps in their knowledge. Staff responded quickly, and most children were thriving. That matters for families whose children arrive with different starting points: the early years findings describe teaching that responds to what children need to learn.
Reading is another clear thread. It is prioritised from the Nursery class onwards, placing early reading alongside communication and writing. The school uses Read Write Inc for its approach to early reading, a phonics programme centred on learning to decode words. This gives parents a named approach to recognise as their child’s reading develops, although the school’s use of the programme should not be read as a timetable for every nursery session.
In July 2024, children in early years benefited from positive connections with staff. Those relationships sit alongside the learning priorities: adults who know children provide a human connection as they begin school life. Safeguarding arrangements across the school were effective at that inspection.
Family support includes One Stockport Family Hubs, Startwell Stockport and free online family courses. These give families support options beyond classroom conversations. The school also holds two parents’ evenings each year: autumn discussions introduce teachers and allow families to share information, while spring discussions focus on children’s work and progress. Parents can arrange a conversation with a teacher after school, giving concerns a route between those meetings.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Vale View’s school admissions route is through Stockport Council’s online school admissions service; admissions are handled directly at Stopford House.
Treat choosing Nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions. Being part of the school’s early years provision does not remove the need to apply again.
Nursery top-ups follow a distinct weekly pattern: all-day top-ups on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with a half-day top-up on Wednesday. Families considering additional nursery time can use that pattern to assess how it fits their week. Contact the school for current charges.
