At a Glance

Muddy Mondays give Vernon Park’s nursery an outdoor thread: early years children use the school’s environmental area, with fenced woodland on the slope behind the building. Rhyme and rhythm provide another defining feature, giving children an introduction to the sounds that support later reading.

This is the nursery class within Vernon Park Primary School on Peak Street, Stockport, with entry from age three. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Requires improvement at its inspection on 11 and 12 February 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Language has a clear place in the learning programme. The curriculum draws on Development Matters, and its approach includes adults modelling speech and helping children develop their vocabulary. For parents, this means attention to how children communicate as well as what they learn. In Nursery, rhyme and rhythm activities were preparing children successfully for the next steps in reading in February 2025.

Outdoor learning has a named routine: Muddy Mondays. Early years children regularly use the environmental area and also take part in seasonal forest events, including Christmas and Easter trails. The woodland gives this provision a concrete outdoor setting. These early years activities are distinct from the scheduled Forest School programme for older children.

Curriculum consistency. In February 2025, some early years learning content lacked precision, and checks on children’s understanding did not reliably identify or resolve mistakes. Delivery also varied in parts of the curriculum, leaving gaps in the foundations for further learning. Families should weigh the specific strengths in early reading alongside these concerns about what children learn and how their understanding is checked.

Care and Support

Clear behaviour routines were understood and followed by early years children in February 2025. Children behaved well both in classrooms and elsewhere around school. Predictable expectations matter for children learning to manage a shared day with other people.

For additional needs, the Inclusion and SEND Lead works with families and can be contacted through the office or at senco@vernonpark.stockport.sch.uk. For children aged three to five who have specific language difficulties, the school has a Speech and Language Centre. Entry requires a Speech Therapy service referral; families cannot apply directly. This is a distinct referral route, rather than ordinary nursery admission.

Meals are supplied by Dolce Ltd, and nursery meals carry a charge unless a child qualifies for free meals. From September 2026, the expanded benefits-based entitlement includes nursery children attending full days whose households receive Universal Credit. Council authorisation is required before free meals can be provided. For eligible families, applying is therefore part of arranging lunch, rather than an automatic consequence of joining.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process, which is coordinated by Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council. For September 2027 Reception entry, the deadline is 15 January 2027.

The school provides a Reception Transition Booklet for families. Treat preparation for the next classroom and securing admission as separate matters: a transition resource does not replace the application.

Practical Information

The nursery lunch period runs from 11.45am to 1.00pm. Contact the school office on 0161 480 4378, or email headteacher@vernonpark.stockport.sch.uk, for nursery enquiries and current meal charges.

Uniform is expected in Nursery, and clothing and shoes should carry the child’s name. Nursery clothing includes a gold polo shirt and sweatshirt, grey or navy bottoms and black school shoes. A dress with yellow and white checks or stripes is the summer alternative. Nursery children do not need a PE kit. Monkhouse supplies uniform, while pre-loved items can be found through the Vernon Park Primary thrift shop on Facebook. Muddy Monday clothing includes long trousers, a long-sleeved top and suitable outdoor footwear, with waterproof clothing as needed. Plan for outdoor learning as part of the nursery routine.
