Nursery at Whitehill Primary School
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
Communication comes first at Whitehill’s nursery. In February 2024, Ofsted identified language development as a nursery priority, giving children a firm foundation for later learning. That is a useful focus for parents weighing up their child’s first experience of school: expressing needs and understanding others matter alongside early academic learning.
The nursery belongs to Whitehill Primary School in Heaton Norris, Stockport, where the school’s age range starts at three. There are 40 part-time nursery places, divided between afternoon and morning groups of 20. This is provision within the primary school, with two distinct session groups for families to consider.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the framework for learning and care from birth to five. It brings together children’s social and emotional development, movement and communication with early mathematics, literacy, creative expression and learning about the world. For parents, that means early education covers how children develop and relate to others as well as what they learn.
Whitehill’s clearest nursery emphasis is communication and language. The February 2024 findings connect that emphasis with a secure foundation for children’s subsequent learning. Language is therefore a central part of the educational picture here.
Early reading also starts within the school’s early years provision. In February 2024, phonics teaching was effective. This gives families a second concrete point of reference alongside the nursery’s language focus, while keeping the finding’s scope clear: it concerns early years across the school.
For additional needs, families have a direct route to the school’s special educational needs coordinator (SENCo). Contact is possible through Class Dojo, by telephone or by emailing senco@whitehill.stockport.sch.uk. The SENCo’s office days are Monday and Tuesday, which helps parents plan a conversation about support.
Whitehill Provision Pyramids explain different levels of school support. Families can also use Stockport SENDIASS for independent, confidential advice about special educational needs and disabilities. These provide routes both for discussing a child’s needs with school and for seeking impartial help outside it.
Attending Whitehill’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal online admissions route. Whitehill follows Stockport’s admissions policy; its stated allocation criteria concern the priority area, siblings and distance from home.
The deadline listed for the 2026 primary intake was 15 January 2026. That cycle is past. Keep the Reception application separate from nursery arrangements and follow the deadline for your child’s intake.
Preparation is a different matter from allocation. Before children start school, Whitehill arranges visits and meetings during the preceding term, giving families time to become familiar with the school and receive information.
Morning and afternoon places form the nursery’s part-time model. School holidays are determined by Stockport Council.
Prospective families can arrange a visit through the office on 0161 4802142 or admin@whitehill.stockport.sch.uk. The visit offers a chance to meet staff and ask questions before applying. Applications are completed online; families seeking a mid-year transfer or moving into the area can contact the office for advice.
