Nursery at Woodley Primary School

Conversation, carefully chosen books and practice before writing give Woodley’s early years provision its character. The nursery belongs to Woodley Primary School on Sherwood Road in Stockport, with a nursery teacher who also leads the EYFS phase and a nursery keyworker.
In the inspection published on 3 February 2026, Ofsted judged early years to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than being a separate nursery rating.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the learning framework for nursery. At Woodley, the early years curriculum covers each area of learning, with books and vocabulary chosen to develop communication and early literacy. Language has a practical purpose here: adults use conversations to extend children’s ideas and help them think through their learning.
Practice matters as much as introducing something new. In February 2026, children in early years were building on existing skills and putting their learning into use, including frequent opportunities to prepare for writing. This gives early writing a foundation before children move towards more formal work. The early years phonics sequence also typically supported children’s developing reading skills.
Expectations are taught through adult example and reinforcement. Alongside learning activities, established routines help children understand how their time together works. The February 2026 early years findings described progress across the areas of learning.
Settling rests on relationships and familiar routines. The February 2026 early years findings linked quick settling to established routines, alongside positive relationships between staff, children and families. Before children start at Woodley, parents can also meet the class teacher individually, giving them time to discuss their child.
For additional needs, the class teacher is the first contact, supported by the school’s SENCO and SEND Officer. The school uses an Assess-Plan-Do-Review cycle, and families review their child’s SEND Support Plan each term. That provides a regular opportunity to consider what is helping and change support where necessary. School facilities include space for individual support and small-group work.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Stockport’s school admissions system at www.stockport.gov.uk/schooladmissions and meet the applicable closing date. Treat this as a separate family task, even when a child already attends Woodley’s nursery.
Transition support has a different purpose: helping children manage the change. Across Woodley, teachers pass information to the next teacher and arrange transition meetings for children. These arrangements support continuity of care and learning; they do not secure admission.
Nursery day timings run from 8.45am to 3.15pm, with classroom doors opening at 8.40am. Children arriving after the doors close should be signed in through the school office.
For drop-off, the gates and link corridor open between 8.25am and 9.00am; collection access runs from 3.00pm to 3.35pm. These access windows help families plan the journey around the nursery day. General enquiries can go to admin@woodley-pri.stockport.sch.uk or 0161 430 6609.
