Play, growing independence and a choice between morning and full-day places shape the nursery at St Mary's Catholic Primary School, Sunderland. Children aged 3–4 join the school's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision, with 15 or 30 hour funded places. The nursery welcomes families of any faith or belief within a Catholic school setting.
The nursery aims to let children progress at their own pace through play, with adults responding to their interests. That gives the provision a clear emphasis: learning starts with what engages the child, rather than pressure to move faster.
Active learning is the nursery's stated approach. Key workers notice children's interests and abilities, then extend these through conversation and play. The school also describes imaginative play as a way for children to explore ideas of their own. For parents, the useful distinction is that play is part of the learning itself.
The EYFS brings together early reading and mathematics with language, movement, relationships and creativity. Children also learn about the world around them. These strands give a broader purpose to nursery activities: developing communication and physical confidence matters alongside the beginnings of literacy and number work.
Independence has practical tasks attached. Families are encouraged to let children put on their own coats and shoes, and to talk with them about their day. These are small steps children can practise at home as well as school, linking self-care with the confidence to explain their experiences.
Key workers build learning around each child's interests and capabilities. The nursery describes adults who understand the children in their care, making those relationships part of its approach to play and development.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school has a SEND co-ordinator and works with families and external agencies where appropriate. Its aim is equal access to learning. School information reaches parents through email and OurSchoolsApp, giving families two channels for updates.
School catering is provided by Chadwick's Kitchen, with food made daily from fresh ingredients. Medical dietary needs are addressed with parents. Packed lunches are permitted, but must exclude nuts and products containing them, a restriction families need to build into lunch preparation.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery entry and Reception admission are separate processes: families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the relevant deadline. Choosing the nursery should therefore be a decision about these early years, rather than an assumption that the next school place is secured.
The booking choices are a morning-only place using 15 funded hours or a full-day place using 30 funded hours. The morning session runs from 8.30am to 11.30am. Families can arrange a visit by emailing info@smrc.school or calling 0191 522 8787, providing a direct first step towards joining.
Nursery uniform includes a white polo shirt, royal blue sweatshirt and royal blue joggers. Black trainers with Velcro fastenings support the emphasis on children managing their own shoes. Label clothing and footwear so items can be identified.
