Nursery at Amington Heath Primary School and Nursery

Story maps, Numberblocks and an emphasis on learning to communicate give Amington Heath’s nursery its character. This is the nursery within Amington Heath Primary School and Nursery in Tamworth, with children able to join after their second birthday. Its two nursery groups are Nursery 1, also called Little Learners, and Nursery 2.
Morning and afternoon sessions give the provision a session-based shape. For families choosing an early introduction to school, the useful detail is what fills those sessions: listening, stories and number work feature in the learning.
Communication comes first. In April 2024, early-years staff focused on developing children’s language from the outset, preparing them for subsequent phonics teaching. Nursery children also used story maps with traditional tales. That links storytelling with representing a sequence, giving young children a concrete way to organise a familiar story.
Phase One of Letters and Sounds supplies the nursery’s starting point for phonics. Children practise listening and speaking, tune into surrounding sounds and begin working on joining sounds together or separating them. As many children reach their final nursery term, teaching introduces letter sounds through memory prompts, word blending and simple blending books. This marks the beginning of Read Write inc. The progression is from hearing sounds to using them in early reading.
Mathematics combines activities within ongoing play provision with work in small groups and planning for children’s next steps. Snappy Maths and a spiral Numberblocks curriculum sit alongside mathematical songs. Development Matters informs this early-years work, with knowledge and vocabulary mapped for each setting. Children therefore encounter number through several kinds of activity, rather than a single teaching format.
Outdoor learning has a physical space of its own. In April 2024, the early-years outdoor area was well equipped and supported children’s learning. Early-years children also have no fixed break times, so their session does not follow the older pupils’ break-time timetable.
A nursery manager and nursery assistants form part of the staffing structure. For a parent raising a concern about learning needs, the school’s SENCO can be contacted at senco@amingtonheath.staffs.sch.uk. This provides a direct route to discuss support alongside conversations with the child’s class teacher.
Teachers and teaching assistants use different teaching methods to respond to differing learning needs. The practical implication is to discuss the child’s individual needs with the team, rather than assume one method will suit every child. Safeguarding concerns can be raised with the headteacher, who holds the designated safeguarding lead role.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the deadline for their child’s intake.
For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026, and applications could be made online through the Staffordshire County Council admissions process. That cycle is now past. Keep the nursery decision and the Reception application as two separate tasks; attending sessions here should not be treated as securing the next place.
Both Little Learners and Nursery 2 have morning sessions from 8:45am to 11:45am and afternoon sessions from noon to 3pm. These are distinct session options, useful for families planning their daily routine around a morning or afternoon place.
Think2 or three-year-old funding begins in the term following the relevant birthday. The starting points depend on the birthday period: January to March birthdays link to the summer term, April to August to autumn, and September to December to spring. Starting nursery after a second birthday and reaching a funded starting point are therefore separate considerations.
Enquiries can be made using the nursery enquiry form or by calling the office on 01827 337465. Visits can also be arranged by appointment through the office, giving families an opportunity to consider the setting before choosing a place.
