Conversation, growing independence and learning to manage feelings give the early years at St Leonard's their character. The nursery belongs to the Church of England primary school in Wigginton, on Syerscote Lane. Its place within a school matters: younger children have contact with older pupils, who help early years children settle through a buddy system.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision to be Strong standard in June 2026. This is an early years judgement within the school's inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating. The strongest detail for parents is the attention to language: adults help children extend their vocabulary during activities with other children.
Learning combines adult guidance with opportunities to use new skills independently. In June 2026, early years staff helped children develop their speech throughout the day, using planned activities to encourage conversation with friends. That gives learning a social purpose as well as an educational one: children practise expressing themselves while taking part together.
Early reading and writing also feature in the early years curriculum. Children learn sounds through phonics, then draw on those sounds when beginning to write for themselves. These findings cover the early years as a whole. They describe a progression from adult teaching towards children trying out what they have learned independently.
Personal development receives deliberate attention alongside this learning. Familiar routines help children handle emotions and become more confident. For a young child, that makes learning to participate and cope with feelings part of the day, rather than a separate concern.
The wider school environment includes a mosaic in the hall, created through a whole-school art project in 2025. Children helped design it around the school's Christian identity and values. This gives the school's faith a concrete expression in a shared physical space.
Relationships with families support the early years provision. In June 2026, staff established children's interests and recognised obstacles to learning promptly. They prioritised identifying special educational needs and/or disabilities early, then adjusted activities and support to individual needs. The practical benefit is that help can respond to the child rather than waiting for difficulties to become entrenched.
Ongoing staff training supports their interactions with children. Older pupils also contribute through the buddy system, helping younger children become familiar with school life. For the September 2026 nursery intake, a parent welcome meeting and a Teddy Bear's Picnic formed part of the preparations before starting.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Staffordshire County Council's online route. For September 2027 entry, applications open on 1 November 2026 and close on 15 January 2027. Applicants seeking a Foundation place must also complete the additional school application form.
Keep that application separate from the relationships and familiarity built during nursery. Settling into school life and securing a Reception place are different matters.
School tours for September 2027 entry can be booked through the office by telephone or email. The open days are 3, 4 and 5 November 2026, with tours between 9:15am and 2:15pm. These are visit times, rather than nursery session hours.
