Water trays, books and outdoor classrooms give Two Gates’ nursery its character: learning starts with things children can handle, explore and talk about. This is a 26-place nursery for children aged 3 and 4, within the school’s Early Years department on Tamworth Road in Tamworth. An extended day is an option alongside nursery sessions.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection of 17 and 18 May 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Play has room to develop here. The timetable protects periods when children can pursue an activity, with adults joining to extend learning or responding when a child invites them. Teaching also happens individually, in small groups and with the whole class. This gives children opportunities both to follow their interests and to learn alongside others.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together communication, physical development and relationships with early reading, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. Books provide a starting point each week, explored over several days. Themes also draw on rhymes, seasonal changes and children’s interests, while assessment helps staff choose each child’s next steps.
There are concrete ways to practise those skills. Nursery children explored water quantities in May 2023, distinguishing beakers that were empty, full or half-full. Adults used clear spoken language to extend vocabulary. For early reading, children begin with listening to sounds around them, rhythm and rhyme; their introduction to Read, Write, Inc comes in the summer term.
Inside, resources children can reach support independent choices. Displays and working walls support learning, while outdoor classrooms are used throughout the year. Across early years, activities with dough, threading, puzzles, chunky crayons and large brushes on outdoor walls help children practise the movements needed for writing.
The staffing structure includes a Nursery Lead Teaching Assistant. Across the school, staff receive emotion-coaching training and use it in daily interactions, giving children help to understand their feelings.
Additional needs were identified promptly in May 2023, with support extending to early years. The school’s SEND approach involves parents when concerns arise, then follows a cycle of assessment, planning, support and review. Children on the SEND register have a Learning Plan, and families are invited to termly reviews. That creates opportunities to discuss targets and agree what should happen next.
Communication deserves attention. In May 2023, some parents across the school felt insufficiently informed about learning and changes, and improving communication was an inspection action. Class Dojo, parent consultations and telephone contact are among the school’s communication routes. Food and drink provided follow School Food Standards; snacks must be healthy, and children have drinking water throughout the day.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route. For the September 2026 intake, online applications went through Staffordshire County Council, with a closing date of 15 January 2026. That deadline has passed.
For children with additional needs, the school’s transition arrangements include classroom visits, meetings between staff and personalised programmes when needed. Learning Plans and essential information pass to the next teacher or setting. These support continuity of care and learning; they do not secure admission.
