Book themes, daily outdoor learning and a focus on language give Dawley’s nursery its character. This is the academy’s own provision on Doseley Road North in Dawley, Telford, with morning and afternoon arrangements for 15 hours and a limited number of 30-hour places. Families can choose between a shorter session and a day that includes lunch.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 7 and 8 June 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Learning combines activities guided by adults with exploration directed by children. Staff plan around children’s interests, development and needs, so the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together learning and personal development rather than treating them as separate tasks. Language, movement and emotional and social development receive particular attention. Maths, early literacy, creative work and discovering the world extend those foundations.
Books give activities a starting point. Across early years, examples have included painting leaf pictures after reading Leaf Man, exploring the number 1 and trying skipping during a workshop. These are examples of how a story, a number or a physical challenge becomes something children can investigate and do.
Outdoor learning has a regular place in the day. An outdoor classroom supports scheduled sessions, while outdoor areas have equipment and resources linked to the EYFS learning areas. Children use these spaces daily, giving them opportunities to explore beyond their indoor classrooms.
Nursery phonics happens daily, beginning with listening and sound skills: counting syllables, recognising rhyme and noticing words with matching initial sounds. The emphasis is on preparation for reading. In June 2023, early years staff adjusted learning to children’s needs, with communication and language taking a leading role.
For children attending for 30 hours, lunch is shared with Reception children. A Nursery Assistant looks after them outside teaching time, making care across the longer day part of the nursery arrangement. Family involvement also includes class lunches with parents and a special October lunch for grandparents in early years.
Additional needs are addressed through both nursery staff and the wider school support structure. In June 2023, early years staff knew children individually and worked with outside agencies to recognise special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Children received support matched to those needs.
The academy uses Assess, Plan, Do, Review to identify needs and organise support. This means considering a child’s needs, planning help, putting it into practice and reviewing it. Parents and external agencies can be involved, with additional resources and interventions used where appropriate. The SENDCO provides a contact for families discussing their child’s needs.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the normal deadline. Telford and Wrekin Council coordinates school places; the academy cannot allocate them itself.
Shared lunches give children attending for 30 hours contact with Reception children during an ordinary daily routine. That connection is separate from admission. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two decisions, even if you hope your child will remain at Dawley.
The morning 15-hour arrangement runs from 8:45am to 11:45am. The 30-hour arrangement starts at 8:45am and finishes at 3:15pm. Afternoon 15-hour sessions are also offered, and 30-hour places are limited. These different patterns matter when matching nursery attendance to family routines.
