In the shadow of The Wrekin, the ancient hill that anchors Shropshire's eastern plain, Telford grew from a network of coalfield villages into a planned New Town of around 157,000 people after its designation in 1963. To the south, Ironbridge Gorge holds UNESCO World Heritage status as the Birthplace of Industry, giving the town a historical depth unusual for a settlement built largely in the twentieth century.
