Minibeast shelters, community superheroes and conversations about family give Lawley Village Academy’s nursery curriculum its character. This is the school’s own nursery in Lawley Village, Telford, with learning organised around the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Its themes begin with children’s familiar world, then introduce transport, animal habitats and the sea. Everyday experiences become starting points for discovery.
Indoor and outdoor activities both feature in the early years provision. The classroom gives children a base for learning and making friends, while experiences outdoors extend what they can explore.
The EYFS brings together learning to communicate, developing physical skills and managing emotions and relationships. Alongside these foundations, children explore mathematics, literacy, creative expression and the world around them. Adults plan activities to suit children’s needs, and the school encourages children to explore through play, persist with challenges and make connections between ideas. The aim is growing independence: children are encouraged to try things and work through problems.
All About Me starts with getting familiar with the classroom, forming friendships and recognising feelings. Children discuss their families and consider how they have changed as they have grown. Everyday Superheroes turns attention towards people who help locally, including firefighters, vets and the police. Community visitors support the topic, which also introduces caring for others, healthy eating and looking after teeth.
Animal learning has practical detail. Children investigate habitats, watch minibeasts where they live and build shelters for them. Butterfly development and the needs of worms and snails provide concrete things to explore. Under the Sea introduces coastal wildlife, environmental care and beach safety. These topics give children something specific to observe, discuss and connect with their own experiences.
During the first term, All About Me helps children become familiar with the classroom, make friends and recognise emotions. Parents can also follow learning through Tapestry, the online learning journal, and contribute observations of their own. A workshop introduces parents to using it when their child starts. That creates a way to connect experiences at home with learning in the nursery.
For special educational needs or disabilities, the class teacher sets up support and relevant interventions. The SENCO can observe and advise, while the teacher arranges support and interventions and monitors progress. Further steps can involve parents and other professionals. This gives families a starting point for raising concerns and discussing support.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Telford and Wrekin Local Authority, which coordinates applications and allocates places. For children born between 1 September 2022 and 31 August 2023, the application period runs from October 2026 to 15 January 2027 for entry in September 2027. Keep that application separate from nursery arrangements.
The school office handles enquiries on 01952 951200. School visits can be arranged by contacting the office for dates and times, giving families an opportunity to discuss the provision in person.
