Two pre-school classes, provision for two-year-olds and an early years sensory room give Old Park’s nursery its own place within a larger primary school. Based in Malinslee, Telford, it combines an introduction to school routines with support that can be adapted to a child’s communication, sensory or learning needs.
Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 2 and 3 March 2023. Children were learning expectations for behaviour and learning from their nursery years, giving those routines an early start.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for the nursery’s education and care, with Birth to 5 Matters used to begin planning early years learning. Children are assessed when they join, so their existing learning provides a starting point. The practical implication is that planning can respond to where a child is starting.
For children needing additional help, activities can be adjusted and learning broken into smaller steps. Support includes practical and physical participation, communication and language, and experiences involving different senses. Small groups or individual work may be used for speech and language programmes, including TalkBoost, rather than expecting every child to learn in the same way.
Hedgehogs is a sensory room available to early years children with differing needs. Alongside classroom activities, it provides another space for support. Visual timetables, sensory breaks and quiet spaces also form part of the school’s ordinary provision for children with SEND.
The nursery teacher manages nursery special educational needs with help from the SENCO. Individual Plan, Do, Review arrangements record short-term targets, the support to be used and how often an intervention happens. Reviews guide the next steps, while families contribute information about their child and are consulted before outside services become involved.
Support for communication includes Makaton, Attention Bucket and Intensive Interaction among the interventions available across the school and nursery. During 2025–2026, Old Park participated in Early Language Support for Every Child (ELSEC), which included nursery children. Specialist teams supported speech, language and communication work, and staff received training to deliver interventions.
Settling support can involve meeting staff and exchanging information with a child’s previous setting or specialist services. For children with SEND, additional visits and transition booklets can help make a change more familiar. Parents can arrange conversations with teaching staff at the beginning or end of the day; home-school books or emails are used where appropriate.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the normal deadline. Treat that application as a distinct step when planning your child’s next year.
Transition support serves a different purpose. Information passes to the next teacher, including support plans and Social, Emotional and Sensory Passports where relevant. For a child with additional needs, this helps the receiving staff understand the strategies already in use.
