Nursery at St Matthew's Church of England Aided Primary School and Nursery Centre

Three-hour sessions shape nursery life at St Matthew's, with morning and afternoon groups and a smaller full-time option. The Nursery Centre belongs to St Matthew's Church of England Aided Primary School in Donnington Wood, Telford, and serves children aged three and four. There are up to 64 part-time places, alongside 10 full-time places for children who qualify. That makes the attendance pattern an early practical choice for families.
Morning children attend from 8.40am to 11.40am; the afternoon runs from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Both patterns operate Monday to Friday. Full-time attendance runs from 8.40am to 3.15pm, bringing the two parts of the day together.
Classroom and outdoor activities form part of the early years provision. Spoken language is a focus: in June 2025, staff were receiving training to support children's speech and were helping them extend their vocabulary. For parents, this gives a concrete learning priority to discuss alongside the session pattern.
Curriculum consistency. At the ungraded Ofsted inspection on 10 and 11 June 2025, activities indoors and outdoors did not consistently fit the planned early years curriculum. Work to strengthen that curriculum was under way. Families should weigh the language work alongside this concern and ask how activities connect to the learning intended for their child.
Settling starts before the first regular session. Children are invited to at least two induction sessions near the end of the preceding half-term. Parents are encouraged to practise leaving their child, giving children time to get to know the adults, other children and nursery routines. A separate meeting helps parents become familiar with staff and the way the nursery works; uniform and book bags can also be ordered then.
A qualified teacher leads the nursery, supported by two teaching assistants, with students and volunteers providing additional help. In June 2025, early years children received attentive care, and staff took care to help them become accustomed to school routines.
For developmental or learning concerns, the class teacher and SENCo provide contact points. The SENCo's remit includes nursery children. Where a child has a disability, parents, teachers, the SENCo and relevant agencies meet to prepare a care plan and risk assessment, giving families a role in planning support. Children taking the longer childcare option stay through dinner time, with an additional charge for that arrangement.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at St Matthew's. Families must make a separate application through Telford & Wrekin's common application process at www.telford.gov.uk/admissions. For September 2025 entry, the deadline was 15 January 2025. Expressions of interest to the school do not create a waiting-list place or an offer.
Transition support is a separate matter. Children transferring to St Matthew's have transfer sessions during the half-term before starting school, and the Reception teacher has planned opportunities to work with them in the Nursery Centre. This introduces a future teacher in familiar surroundings; it does not secure admission.
The morning or afternoon pattern provides 15 hours each week. Working parents can apply for 30-hour provision subject to eligibility, with up to 10 places available. Ask the school for current charges for staying through dinner time.
Enquiries go through the Nursery Centre or school administration office on 01952 386260. Families can arrange a school viewing by telephone. A nursery consideration form records any session preference, and families offered a place are invited to transition visits. At collection, nursery children should be picked up before siblings attending the school.
The nursery serves children aged three and four. Entry is normally from the term after a child's third birthday, subject to a place being available.
Monday to Friday mornings run from 8.40am to 11.40am and afternoons from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Full-time places run from 8.40am to 3.15pm for children who qualify.
Children are invited to a minimum of two induction sessions before starting. Parents are encouraged to practise leaving them, and a separate parent meeting introduces staff and nursery routines.
No. Families must apply separately through Telford & Wrekin's common application process. An expression of interest to the school does not create a waiting-list place or an offer.
Speak to your child's class teacher or the SENCo, whose responsibilities include nursery children. For a child with a disability, parents and relevant professionals meet to prepare a care plan and risk assessment.
