Play, communication and learning adapted to each child give the Assessment Nursery at The Bridge at HLC its character. This is nursery provision within a special school serving children with severe learning difficulties and those with profound and multiple learning difficulties. The nursery has space for 40 children; that is capacity, rather than a count of children attending.
Within Hadley Learning Community, the school occupies an accessible building with areas for each phase and facilities shared across ages. Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Outstanding following its inspection on 1 and 2 July 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school.
Children learn chiefly through play, with adults supporting both activities children choose and activities adults lead. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is adapted around individual needs. In parent language, its seven learning areas bring together communication, relationships, movement, early reading and writing, maths, understanding the world and creative expression. The nursery aims to build confidence and independence alongside social skills, giving these everyday abilities a place within learning.
Books can be explored alone or with others, while computers and messy activities provide different ways into early writing. Number work includes shapes and measures. Practical experiments and encounters with plants, creatures and everyday objects help children explore their surroundings; music, dance, art and role play give them ways to express ideas and feelings. These are different routes into participation, rather than a single task that every child must approach identically.
The school's total communication approach combines adapted resources with technology to support access to learning. Shared facilities include interactive dark rooms and soft play rooms. These are school facilities, rather than nursery-exclusive rooms.
Understanding children before they start matters here. The July 2025 inspection found that early years staff were ready to engage with children from their first days because they already understood their needs. This gives the start of nursery a practical focus: adults being ready to engage with each child.
Class teams comprise a teacher, a senior teaching assistant and teaching assistants. Staff induction includes speech and language training alongside safeguarding, with training refreshed regularly. At snack time, nursery children receive support to make healthy food choices, connecting care with their learning about physical development.
Young children in the Foundation Stage do not receive homework. Collaboration with parents remains part of the approach, and families can speak with their child's teacher for support. That keeps home involvement focused on working together rather than completing formal tasks.
