Nursery at Wombridge Primary School

Children’s interests shape the early years learning at Wombridge: adults observe what engages each child, then plan activities around those interests and individual needs. Choice matters here. The nursery belongs to Wombridge Primary School in Hartshill, Oakengates, Telford, giving families a school setting for their child’s early education.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 8 and 9 November 2022. That is an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for learning and care. Its seven learning areas bring together language and communication, physical skills and emotional development with maths, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world. For parents, this means early education covers relationships and movement as well as the beginnings of reading and number work.
Adults use observation to get to know children and shape learning opportunities. Children can select open-ended activities inside and outdoors, allowing their own interests to influence what they explore. The approach gives children a part in choosing their learning, while adults plan around their needs.
The wider school grounds include a greenhouse, log areas, a climbing frame and a large playing field, alongside Forest School. These are school facilities rather than a description of a dedicated nursery garden. They give the school’s outdoor curriculum a concrete setting, including space for growing vegetables and plants from seed.
Class Dojo is the school’s preferred channel for messages to class teachers. Teachers check their inboxes regularly and aim to reply during school hours, giving parents a direct route for information about their child.
For special educational needs and disabilities, Wombridge describes a graduated approach: identifying needs early and building support around them. The school also provides Makaton vocabulary for families to try, using signs and symbols alongside speech to support communication.
Medical planning needs attention before a child starts. A serious condition that threatens life or long-term health requires a healthcare plan agreed by the family, school and a medical professional. A child who needs that plan cannot attend until it is agreed; the school aims to complete the process within two weeks, with parental cooperation a key factor in how long it takes. Bring relevant medical documents to the admission meeting so planning can begin.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through Telford and Wrekin Council’s online school admissions portal, meeting the deadline for their child’s admission year.
Familiarity is a separate benefit. In September 2025, nursery children visited the Reception classroom for story time, spending time with its teachers and surroundings. That gives children an introduction to the next classroom; it does not secure admission.
Nursery enquiries go through the school office on 01952 388040. The school also welcomes contact from families interested in a visit. Its address is Hartshill, Oakengates, Telford, TF2 6AN, and the contact email is A2112@telford.gov.uk.
