A home visit comes before the first nursery induction session here. That gives children a chance to begin their relationship with staff in familiar surroundings, rather than making every introduction in a new classroom.
The Nest is the nursery at Wrockwardine Wood Infant School and Nursery on Church Road in Telford. Children generally start funded places at the beginning of the term following their third birthday. Earlier entry during the term of that birthday depends on space and eligibility for Talking Two's funding.
Morning and afternoon sessions give the day two distinct starting points. Learning follows the Early Years curriculum: children develop communication, physical skills and relationships alongside early literacy, mathematics, creativity and an understanding of the world. These are connected aspects of development, rather than simply a timetable of school subjects.
Staff observe children's interests and development, then use those observations to plan subsequent learning. Parents' observations contribute too, so learning at home can help shape what happens next in nursery. Development Matters provides guidance on children's developmental stages and helps staff decide their next steps.
Across the school's classrooms, regulation stations and toolbox kits sit alongside resources such as visual timetables, sensory objects and equipment for physical skills. For children needing adaptations, these provide practical ways to take part in learning.
Settling begins with a home visit, followed by an induction session involving the nursery teacher and an early years practitioner. Each child has a key person to help them settle. Nursery children build towards their half-day placement over several weeks; children with additional needs may have a longer introduction and extra visits, agreed with parents and other professionals. The pace can respond to the child.
Stay and Play sessions involve parents in nursery life, and parents can help their child settle to an activity before leaving. For children with SEND, support follows an Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle. An Individual Provision Map records the agreed support, with reviews each half term. This gives families a recurring opportunity to consider whether adjustments are helping.
Fruit is provided daily, with milk twice a week. Catering can accommodate dietary requirements, including dairy-free meals, and adapted cutlery supports independence. Staff also help with toileting where needed, working with parents. Wheelchair access and accessible emergency escape routes are provided at the nurseries, making physical access part of the care arrangements.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Telford and Wrekin school admissions by the normal deadline; the local authority allocates places.
Once a place is allocated, children and parents are invited to meet Reception staff. Children with special educational needs can have meetings involving the SEND coordinator to plan provision. Transition arrangements also allow additional classroom visits where needed. Familiarity and preparation support the move, but they do not secure admission.
The morning session runs from 8:45am to 11:45am; the afternoon session runs from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Funded places cover either 15 or 30 hours.
To enquire about a nursery place, complete the initial application form available from the school office. A more detailed admissions form follows an offer. Tours cover both nursery and school: call 01952 387 860 to arrange an appointment. Collection arrangements require the adult who brought the child to collect them unless the school has been told otherwise.
