Learning alongside older children gives Great Hockham’s nursery its defining character. Nursery children share a mixed-age class with Reception pupils, rather than learning in a separate nursery group. Rabbit Class brings those ages together, allowing younger children to join older classmates in play and exploration.
The Ofsted report published on 17 March 2026 judged the school’s early years provision Strong standard. That judgement covers the school’s early years, rather than a separately inspected nursery. Relationships, language development and teaching adapted to individual children were strengths, making the personal attention as significant as the mixed-age arrangement.
Conversation does real teaching work here. Staff helped the youngest children explore container capacity and describe their discoveries using the words full and empty. Questions encouraged children to explain their ideas, while their answers helped adults understand their learning. Practical exploration and precise vocabulary work together.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) includes learning about the surrounding world: science sits within Understanding the World. Early years classrooms have an I Wonder... board for scientific questions, giving curiosity a visible place in the learning environment. Nursery mathematics uses Master the Curriculum, with daily maths teaching across the year groups. The emphasis is on developing early mathematical understanding, rather than simply producing answers.
Outdoor space adds another dimension. The school grounds include established trees, an orchard, a wildlife area and a large field. Classes can also use village woodland through an arrangement with the Fuel and Furze charity. These are shared school resources, offering a physical setting for exploration beyond the classroom.
Children’s interests and individual needs shape early years teaching. Staff adjusted learning so that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities could succeed alongside their peers. Parents took an active part in early education through trusting relationships with staff. Families can contact the SEND coordinator through the office or at sendco@hockham.set.education.
Rabbit Class has a teacher and teaching assistants, and its children also have Year 6 Buddies. This gives the youngest pupils a connection with older children beyond their own classroom.
Every nursery child receives fruit and milk each day at no charge. Children staying for lunch can bring food from home or have a charged school meal. Toilet training is requested before joining wherever possible; when that is not achievable, families supply wipes and their child’s nappies or pull-ups. The qualification matters: toilet training is a request with an explicit allowance for children who are not yet ready.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school-place application through Norfolk County Council, following the normal application deadline. Sharing Rabbit Class with Reception children provides familiarity with the classroom and older classmates; it does not replace that application.
Eligible parents can use 15 or 30 funded hours, with additional hours charged. A full school week totals 32.5 hours, so families using that pattern should account for time beyond their entitlement. Contact the school for current charges.
Nursery applications and changes to attendance hours have separate forms. Enquiries and appointments to visit go through the school office on 01953 498302; email contact is office@hockham.set.education.
Uniform is required, but branded clothing is optional and families can buy from any retailer. Nursery children may wear plain jogging bottoms in black or charcoal grey. A uniform exchange supplies secondhand items subject to availability, giving families another practical way to obtain clothing.
