Songs, stories and three distinct session patterns give Norwich Road Academy’s nursery its shape. This is provision for three- and four-year-olds within the academy in Thetford, with Honeybees attending mornings, Bumblebees afternoons and Caterpillars staying all day. Those names mark a practical choice: a shorter session or a day spanning both morning and afternoon.
Ofsted judged the early years provision Good at the inspection on 22 and 23 October 2024. That judgement covers the academy’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. The nursery’s character is a combination of adult teaching, purposeful play and repeated practice with language.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for learning. Here, direct teaching sits alongside purposeful play, so children learn through both adult instruction and play with a learning purpose. The academy aims for education centred on the child, with confidence and enjoyment of learning among its priorities.
Four EYFS themes guide that approach: recognising each child’s individuality, building relationships, creating surroundings that support learning and developing children’s knowledge and skills. For parents, the useful distinction is that learning involves more than the activity itself. Relationships and the conditions in which children play matter too.
In October 2024, nursery children memorised songs and stories as part of their learning. Repetition gave them practice with language and supported vocabulary development. Familiar words and sequences offer a concrete starting point for children learning to communicate.
The curriculum’s sequence included the nursery, giving learning an ordered structure. Curriculum consistency. In October 2024, some subjects across the academy still needed their curriculum more firmly established, and teaching methods needed more consistent application. This was a school-wide improvement requirement; it should sit alongside the positive early years judgement when families weigh the provision.
Summer-term open afternoons welcome the next September nursery intake. Parents and new children also have opportunities to spend time in school to support settling. These introductions give families a way to begin becoming familiar with the setting before the new term.
Rules, manners and routines are taught and practised from the nursery onwards. In October 2024, this helped children make a successful start. Everyday expectations are therefore part of the learning, alongside songs and stories.
For special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the academy aims to spot limited progress promptly and provide targeted help. Parents receive updates about their child’s learning during the year and are kept informed about the SEND process. The academy also works with health professionals, community organisations and the local authority, connecting school support with other services.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet its deadline. Norfolk Local Authority manages the academy’s admissions; its admissions team can be contacted at admissions@norfolk.gov.uk.
Summer open afternoons and opportunities to spend time in school support familiarity and settling. Keep those introductions separate from the allocation of a Reception place.
Morning nursery runs from 9am to noon, afternoon nursery from noon to 3pm, and all-day nursery from 9am to 3pm. The shorter patterns each cover one part of the day; Caterpillars spans both.
