At a Glance

Colour mixing, imaginative play and conversations with adults give Lansdowne’s nursery its character. This is the nursery within Lansdowne Primary Academy in Tilbury, on Lansdowne Road. Its place within a primary school brings a clear educational focus: children’s play is used to develop language, curiosity and confidence.

Ofsted’s June 2026 judgement for early years was Strong standard, covering the school’s early years provision rather than a separate nursery inspection. Predictable routines begin in the nursery classroom. For a young child, that consistency gives the day a familiar structure alongside opportunities to explore.

The Nursery Day

Conversation does real teaching work here. Language learning runs through play: adult commentary and questions help children expand their vocabulary and grow in confidence as learners. Play has a purpose.

The early years foundation stage combines learning through activities with the beginnings of literacy and mathematics. At Lansdowne, painting includes experimenting with colour, while a role play area lets children develop ideas together. These are practical opportunities to explore, create and communicate with other children, rather than simply listen to an adult.

Across early years, learning to read has a prominent place in the day, with phonics teaching alongside early writing and mathematics. Adults check children’s understanding and adjust their teaching when something needs more attention. The implication is useful for parents: learning can respond to a child’s next step instead of moving ahead regardless.

A nursery outing to the Gruffalo trail at Thorndon Park brought storytelling outdoors. Children moving on to Reception searched the woods for story characters, sang and acted as squirrels. They also made owls and snakes using materials gathered from the ground. That particular experience connected a familiar story with imaginative movement and making things in a woodland setting.

Care and Support

Relationships with families form part of the early years provision. Staff work positively with parents and carers, as well as other professionals. When checks reveal that a child needs additional help, staff adjust the learning and seek further support. This connects what happens in the classroom with help beyond it.

Across the school, support for special educational needs and disabilities follows an assess, plan, do and review cycle. Teaching is adapted, with scaffolding and explicit instructions among the approaches used. For families, the useful principle is that support is reviewed against the child’s needs rather than treated as a fixed arrangement.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Lansdowne’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as two separate decisions.

The Thorndon Park outing involved nursery children preparing to move on to Reception. It was a shared experience for that group; it should not be read as an admissions advantage.
