A kitchen in the home corner, familiar books and conversation over snacks give Witheridge’s nursery its everyday character. This is the school’s own provision for 2- and 3-year-olds in Witheridge, Devon. The January 2026 Ofsted inspection judged early years to meet the Expected standard, with effective provision for these younger children and a clear improvement priority around independent play.
Books give learning a familiar starting point. Across early years, children return to their favourite five books, while other carefully selected stories introduce different lives and experiences. Adults build vocabulary through examples such as icebergs and arctic fox. For parents, the emphasis is on both enjoying stories and developing the language children need to talk about their discoveries.
The early years foundation stage curriculum spans seven learning areas. Its practical shape includes conversation, early reading and number work: daily phonics develops the beginnings of reading, while fingers and objects help make number facts involving 3 concrete when teaching is most effective. Younger children also practise being together at snack time, talking with friends rather than simply eating alongside them.
Inside the nursery, new kitchen equipment was added to the home corner in February 2026, giving children another resource for pretend play. Independent exploration needs closer attention, however. Some activities do too little to advance learning, and opportunities for adults to develop children’s thinking during play are inconsistent. Improving those activities and interactions was an early years inspection priority. That is a useful point to keep in mind when considering how play becomes learning here.
Settling is a strength of the provision for younger children. In January 2026, calm routines helped them become comfortable quickly, and staff worked with families to understand individual needs. This gives the start of nursery a practical focus: helping children settle and feel secure.
Support for additional needs starts with early identification and prompt changes to classroom provision. Staff can draw on the special educational needs coordinator, with external agencies involved when needed. Support therefore includes changes to children’s immediate learning experience. Families can also contact the school’s SEND team for advice; speech and language referral resources include Children and Family Health Devon.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate formal application through Devon County Council’s admissions service, using the normal Reception application process and meeting its deadline. Treat this as a separate step in planning your child’s education, even when they already attend the nursery. Applications can be made online through Devon’s admissions service or using an application form.

Wraparound care includes nursery-aged children, who are charged at their nursery hourly rate between 8am and 5.30pm. Breakfast club requires advance booking, although occasional attendance can be arranged beforehand or by telephone that morning. Breakfast is served in the school hall. After-school collection is restricted to 4.30pm or 5.30pm, so families need to plan their working day around those fixed collection points.
