New words are a defining feature of Ellacombe’s early years: adults introduce vocabulary, children try it out, and learning grows through activities that catch their interest. This is school-attached provision in Torquay, with a pre-school welcoming children from two years old. The emphasis is on helping young children communicate and develop the confidence to keep trying.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 8 and 9 May 2024. That judgement covers the early years within the academy, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Language gives learning its direction. In May 2024, adults demonstrated unfamiliar words for children to use themselves, helping them extend their vocabulary. For a young child, that means learning involves hearing language in use and practising it, rather than simply being introduced to a new word and moving on.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach involves exploration and play, with learning adjusted to individual children. In parent terms, the emphasis is on discovering and trying things, rather than formal work seated at tables. Activities provide a reason to take part. The early years findings in May 2024 linked these purposeful experiences both to children’s interests and to their developing ability to cope emotionally.
Early reading also deserves attention. In May 2024, children began learning sound knowledge from the start of school, and those needing additional help were identified promptly. However, staff expertise in phonics varied, affecting how successfully the programme was taught. Further staff training was required. This is a material qualification to the positive early years judgement, especially for families placing weight on the support their child will receive with learning sounds.
Emotional development sits alongside language learning. In May 2024, activities helped early years children strengthen their resilience: learning was intended to engage their interests while helping them cope with challenges. This gives the day a developmental purpose beyond acquiring vocabulary.
At school level, partnership with families can include help from the Family Support Team and opportunities to join celebrations of learning. The academy describes working together with parents as part of its approach to caring for children.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate formal application, including those whose children already attend the nursery. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as two distinct decisions.
For Torbay residents, the application window runs from 15 November to 15 January, through the local authority’s Citizens’ Portal. Families living in another local authority apply through their home council, with the same closing date. Keep that application deadline in your plans even while your child is settled in nursery.
